I used to be able to get the link for my photo in just one click, now I have to click three times to cycle through the photo in clack, then choose all sizes to then get the copy link section.

anyone have a trick for getting the link without the need to click so many times?
 
right click on image, select original size then right click on original sized image and copy image locatioon
 
  1. Click the Share This menu above your photo
  2. Select Grab the HTML/BBCode and then the BBCode button
  3. Change the size you want, if you want to
  4. Copy the code in the box
  5. Paste directly into your post without any further ado

You get a Flickr-terms-compliant link back to your photo page and your photo's title and your name.

have you used flickr recently?

If you right click on a thumbnail you don't get any of those options.

Once clicked on a thumbnail if you right click all you get is:

This photo is C All rights reserved

then you have to choose view available sizes. Then you can right click and copy image location

This helps, but it is still more complicated than it used to be. You used to be able to click on the thumbnail then right click on the image and choose copy.

Now it's a least one extra step even with this method - what exactly did the change improve?

It added an automatically generated BBcode script.. which is a massive help for sharing images in forums using a link-back clickable image. Even with one extra step in Flickr it saves you a lot of effort on the forum you're sharing the image on. On balance it you should find it quicker following this change - unless you're doing it the hard way at a later stage?
 
I cant help but think the re-design was purposeful, they seem to want to keep the whole sharing and community thing on the site, and want to make the hosting side a bit harder...that is the only reason I can think for the random change and less usability.

...also to be fair the old way for me was never that simple (to do it within their rules, IE linking back etc). I used the Greasemonkey script which did everything with 2 clicks.
 
The hard way..

Right click on Flickr thumbnail, copy link, open forum, click to insert image, paste link - results in a dead image with no link back being displayed (in breach of Flickr TOS).


The new, easy way..

Select BBcode from Flickr, paste into body of forum message - results in live image that when you click on it takes you to the photopage.


I really can't see how using Flickr to host images has been made any harder.

but thats only relevant if thats what you used to do. I never did and never do use a link back so for me this was my work flow

1. CLick thumbnail
2. Right click image
3. Choose copy image address
4. Chose IMG tab in TP
5. Paste link

now then it's

1. CLick thumbnail
2. Click Share this
3. Click "Grab the HTML/BBCode"
4. Click into the link
5. Select the IMG part of the link
6. Press CMD Copy
7. Chose IMG tab in TP
8. Paste link

at which point it doesn't appear at 800 width

so then if I want to do it this way where it does I have to:

1. CLick thumbnail
2. Click Share this
3. Click "Grab the HTML/BBCode"
4. Change size to large
5. Change to BBCode
6. Click into the link
7. Select the whole link (CMD A)
8. Press CMD Copy
9. Paste link into TP

so I've gone from 5 steps to 9 - thats just doubled my workload. OR I can do it this way

1. Click thumbnail
2. Click image
3. Press "View all Sizes"
4. Right click image
5. Choose "Copy Image Address"
6. Press CMD Copy
7. Chose IMG tab in TP
8. Paste link

whichever way you look at it, everything has got more difficult
 
yup, you need to right click on the big image, not the thumbnail. I agree with you though it's a PITA!

and how often do we get posts asking how to deter people from nicking photos from Flickr?

If you disable Sharing for your photos, then the Share This menu is disabled. Right click doesn't work by default, so, unless they're willing to go to the trouble of delving through the HTML code, then you've locked people out from using your pic.

Maybe they're just making it easier for people to host in accordance with their terms of service and make it harder for those that don't comply with the Flickr TOS?

they still can, they just click on the image, go to view all sizes and right click there and choose copy image location

wonder what he did that I didn't then, I disabled sharing but when I'm not logged in i can right click mine

must be a pro thing? I don't see an option to not allow downloading in my profile so if you have a standard account you can't disable it.

I have a pro account and cant see an option to stop downloading either.
 
actually yes I can - first option "Who can access your original image files?" :p
 
If you cant see that option then I guess it is just a pro feature, would seem an odd thing for them to make just for pros though. No way I can test in a none pro account to find out.

no it did work!

followed the link, god knows how to get to said link but it worked all the same!
 
To get there click on your name at the top of the screen, then select the "Privacy & Permissions" tab :)

I don't believe it is. It's not listed as an advantage of Pro accounts in the FAQ

It's possible my links may not work for you. Go to You > Your Account and then to the Privacy & Permissions tab.



There's an explanation of their rationale here which makes no mention of distinguishing between Pro and non-Pro accounts.

I see it now cheers, so it's that you have to disable sharing AND who can download the original image to stop people taking your pic.

I must admit I thought that's what I'd posted, but reading it back I missed out the originals bit. Sorry.

I think the new bbcode system with flickr is brilliant, It is about flipping time they offered a simple way to share to forums and comply with their terms but at least they finally have, good for them!
 
Only 8/9 if you choose to avoid linking back which is in breach of their T&C. I like the new system as it saves a lot of time for those people that abide by the rules.

If you don't like it find another host.

and if you were doing it the proper way, in compliance with Flickrs T&Cs which have been like that since I can remember and long before Yahoo!.


  1. Click thumbnail
  2. right click image to copy URL
  3. click to posting window/tab
  4. click image icon on forum
  5. Paste image url into dialog
  6. click OK on the image dialog
  7. go back to Flickr window/tab
  8. select the photo page URL
  9. copy the URL
  10. go back to forum
  11. click in post before the tag
    [*]type [i][ url=[/i]
    [*]paste photo page URL
    [*]type [i]][/i]
    [*]click at the end of the [img] tag
    [*]type [i][/url][/i]
    [/LIST]

    add an extra four or more clicks if you wanted a different size to the standard 500px and a bunch more if you wanted a text link too.

    and then a bunch more when you realise you'd typed [ulr] instead of [url] somewhere along the line

    :)

so its more than 8/9 then is that what your are saying? well thats even worse, what else can i use that is easier?

Well considering it used to take me half those steps, I'd like it to be twice as easy. Will try photobucket and see if that's less steps
 
Well I bought a pro account and wished I had not bothered ,it's very slow and very labour intensive ,the whole process of saving pics for flickr,then even worse for posting pics,and the whole site is over complicated ,hard to work out and disapointing,frankly.
