Flickr High Resolution Photos

I've been using Flickr for about a year or so and only post resized, smaller images.

Is it safe to post high resolution photos? I mean, even if I disabled original/hi-res downloads is it still possible for someone to download the original image?

I think you have to switch the high res function on to upload high res images. And if the setting is is switched off I would off thought it's not possible to download the original image size.

If you're worried about people pinching photos from Flickr, either cover them with watermarks (which doesn't do them many favours and can still be removed with some time and effort) or don't post any high resolution large files. Personally, I only use it as a host for shots I post here, not so much to stop them being nicked as that I far prefer to show off my shots as decent sized prints. The shots I do upload get resized to 800 pixels on the longest side and reduced to >200kB file size, enough for about a 3"x2" print at the oft quoted 300DPI resolution although a 6"x4" print isn't too bad.

Sorry but that's wrong.

Even with it turned off you can get the image in under a minute. Either by finding the image source in the HTML or just plain old screen shotting it.

And that's ignoring the copy your browser automatically puts in its cache

@neil_g, I thought so - I wondered whether Flickr had found a way to disable this but, as I have dabbled in web development, I know that most types of protection can be bypassed, using the methods you mention.

The safest thing to do is to carry on uploading lower res, watermarked images I think.
