Hi all,

I've just been starting using flickr, to start really mainly to upload photos on here easier.
But now what do you do how do you find groups which are good? Or do you mainly follow peoples themselves as group have too much "not interresting stuff" between good stuff?

Three interest I have are:
- Scottish wildlife
- Milky way and northern light photo but mainly shot in the uk
- Portrait mainly shot with natural light

Any suggestion?

Obligatory : https://www.flickr.com/groups/talkphotography/

I like local groups (geographically local) so that I can pick up some tips for good places to visit, and from that I tend to follow people I like. It depends what you want from Groups. I like to use them for inspiration and ideas, so the lens groups (e.g. "Fuji 35mm f1.4") are good because of the variety. I tend not to bother with genre based groups because I find them very samey. If you want likes/faves though, I have no clue about that.

Just type the things you're interested in into the search box on Flickr and select "Search Groups".

e.g. searching for "Scottish Wildlife" brings up several that look like they might fit the bill, including:
thanks, yes i saw this there's so much choose from it's actually hard!

I see what you mean there, a bit of a risk and overload of samey stuff.

Thanks for that, I never thought to search local groups. I've always just gone for generas that I'm interested in.

My take on groups is that they are rarely curated, even when some of them claim to be, so that content is very uneven and you're going to come across a lot of mediocre stuff. Depends how you value your time.

That what i seemed to summarize my first impression pretty well.

I think that if you try to find work in a certain genre of any kind then regardless of groups a search is equally going to throw up gallons of stuff of widely varying worth. Flickr, after all, is open to every Tom Dick and Hilary. That's the way of it.

I would rather hunt down individuals whose work I consistently enjoyed, and follow them so that I get to see their stuff as they post it. If you also research what they in turn favourite (or who they follow), the net will widen ...

hhhmmmmm dick and hillary in one sentence haven't you forgotten Monica :beer:

Try looking at groups for your lens collection, I find the variety very good showing similar to your genres and opening your mind to other options.

Personally I prefer to follow a few people that produce the goods consistently but dumping in certain groups may help to gain more exposure and potential buyers. Most groups will be useless and will receive hundreds of mostly dreadful images per day sinking the good content together. Flickr is no longer the default go to place for photography sharing sadly but maybe they could come back in the new hands. You have to also use all the weird platforms like Fakebook, instascam, t***ter, 500px and more for maximum effect.

Now I can't get that horrible image out of my mind. What have you done!
