I thought you couldn't manipulate it because the algorithm changes?

It will require a certain activity to get picked up (comments, views within timeframe etc,.) whatever the algorithm and this can depend on what groups you put it in, how you 'sell' it and so on.

Well done for getting it on there and have to say I find it a bit bitter for someone to suggest you somehow falsified the comments and views. Maybe they have tried that and failed :)

Never been to Cannock Chase Ive been near it twice next time I do Ill go, you can get an add on for flickr called scout and it shows which images of yours have bee explores http://bighugelabs.com/scout.php

Meh, it's OK!

That scout thing is how I found it when someone commented on it!

I do add them to groups, as I upload them in the Organiser I send them to groups too, much easier!

My comment was based on another post by the OP that stated she used ridiculous tags that have no relevance to the image to get more views and into explore. I wondered if this was one of them.

Ah fair enough, no I don't do that as a rule! Just tried it as I read it somewhere and it made me laugh! :lol:

What exactly is explore anyway? I've had two or three picture with people congratulating me on explore but I don't know what they're on about.
 
I'd love to know too! I got a message from somene I didn't know congratulating me on 'Explore'.....:shrug:

It's not the best shots, computers can't asses what's good about a photo. It's a page compiled based on an algorithm that changes using variables such as views, comments and favourites. Generally the more popular an image the higher chance it has of being explored which should in theory mean it's the best shots but it doesn't necessarily work like that.

Thanks Dave. Reading that page, it suggests that there are 500 shots per day getting onto Explore. Apparently, mine (red squirrel) was on 2nd October. News to me!!:lol:

It's all a big mystery today. I had one in Explore on Nov 19th which was subsequently dropped. But one was chosen on the 20th, then the 21st, then yesterday too. So, 4 over the last 4 days, but who knows why.

A few months ago they apparently changed the formula for shots reaching explore. In the past a shot with that amount of views would almost certainly have got into explore. There are now more shots with less views, comments, fav's getting in.
What I find even more strange is that the majority (not all:nono:) of shots that reach explore are still of a reasonable to very good standard. Considering the amount of snap shots that are uploaded to flickr, which must be well over 90%, you would expect more poorer quality shots to reach explore. It makes you think although a computer is picking stuff at random based on several factors, there must still be some manual intervention to weed out the rubbish:lol:

To the OP, your shot is excellent and deserves to be there:clap:

I think that there must be some human intervention. Back in June I had 2 shots go into Explore, both of which were subsequently dropped. I suspect the subject matter was the cause.
 
I've had another in today, which means I've now had 7 explored since 8th september (two this week), only one has stayed there though, no doubt todays will get dropped as well :D

Edit: Oh look, it tells you in my banner, never noticed that before....Obviously not the dropped ones though!

The one I had added, then dropped, from the 19th has now been re-added. So I now have explores from Nov 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd.

Mine tend to go in runs too, 42 so far, my thinking is that if you get one then as people look at the explored photo they also look at your next few pics, increasing their "interestingness" as Flickr calls it and making them more likely to be explored.
 
Well for the first time I have a photo that is currently number 1 in Flickr Explore!

Well done Ricardo. I'm not really sure how Explore works but I've had a few in explore that have been dropped but so far this year I've had two that have got into the top 10 but since then nothing. I think once you've had picture high in explore it must be harder to get others in.
I know some people say so what, you've got pictures in explore but the way I see it is that I want people to see my pictures and the more people that do the better. The two picture I've had high in explore have both had well over 4000 views which wouldn't have happened if they wasn't in explore. Also I find it no coincidence that in the week after my first top ten Getty was in contact with me for some of my images and also What Digital Camera magazine to publish some of my images which hopefully will happen soon.
