Yes
I work for a School Tour Operator and we are currently launching a Christmas market offer and we need some images.

Is there any images on Flickr with free copyright?

Even if they are free, do we need to ask the author to use them?

You used to be able to search on flickr for images with a Creative Commons licence (type CC into the search box and you might see it); if the licence is CC-BY (ie attribution) then you can use the image as you wish as long as you credit the copyright holder appropriately. They will probably be chuffed if you let them know!

You still can.

Not the full story, you need to check that the CC license doesn't prohibit commercial use.

Why such a tighta**ed company? Is there really no money in school tours to buy some images? Are you giving away tours for free?

If there's not even enough in the petty cash for a handful of images, I wonder if things are going so badly you're already skimping on vehicle maintenance and insurance?

You are a commercial company. Stop being such tight fisted t***s and bloody well pay for your advertising properly.

That's a shame that some people are quick to make a judgement based on a single question.
That wasn't the goal of this thread to offend anyone.

Sorry chaps, but I think you're out of order here. If you have a choice between paying for something, or getting an equivalent something legally for free, why would you pay? Furthermore you should be aware that companies are generally required to act in the best interests of their shareholders, and paying for things when you don't need to doesn't obviously fit that requirement.

Give the guy a break!

What sort of images are you looking for?

The average Flickr user would be happy with £20 and a credit so it's not big budget stuff.. .. and the fact that he has to ask if it would be polite to ask the Flickr user before using their CC image.. ..

When someone doesn't even want to ask permission first, that's the sheer can't-be-a**eness that takes the biscuit for rudeness.. that doesn't deserve a break.

tbh you could read the second part of the OP's question in 2 ways.

`Do I HAVE to!?` (can't be ar5ed attitude) or....

"Even if they are free, do we need to ask the author to use them?" (asking a genuine question/etiquette)

Why are folk so quick to get on their high horse & possibly make assumptions

Why would someone not ask the image owner? - worst case is they get a "No" and have to try someone else.

Having to ask whether it would be polite to ask.. there's positive spin that can be put on that.. it's just courtesy and politeness.

The OP may not have worded the question so well? But as I said you can read it 2 ways.

I still thing the tone of some of the replies isn't `polite` though. ;)
"courtesy and politeness." you said

Boy, photographers are funny...
"Pay me!"
Where can I get free music for my website?
What's a good free template?
I need a model TF.
Sign this release/waiver.

Fabien, Creative Commons is where you should look for images... but CC images will have different usage terms that may limit how/if you can use them. If they licensed them for you to use free, there's nothing wrong in doing so.
Authors/artists should definitely be paid according for image use.

However....do Getty not now provide free images of certain sizes for web use? Could very possibly be wrong though.

Yes, they do. Over 50 million of them. But it uses an iframe to embed and track users.
