Ok, so I officially don't get Flickr

I know my skill & talent level is well below many, many others but I'd love to have a place like Flickr but less populated and still have the ability to share photos with others outside of the community while receiving feedback on my shots

I briefly looked at 500px several months ago but felt a bit intimidated

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Flickr and 500px are good places for that, but the best is the critique & sharing section here!

What do you feel Flickr/500px don't offer you?

The people on 500px are brilliant :D I'm not

Flickr seems to be a bit of a popularity contest which again, isn't really me and I try so hard to get quality over quantity and Flickr seems to be the other way inclined (even though there brilliant people of Flickr too)

I haven't signed up for 500px though, the landing page scares me off

I might take a look at Google + - thanks :)

I have to agree with Lewis here, I use Flickr, 500px and Google+ and the critique section on this forum is still one of my favourite places to post if I want some valuable critique rather than people just saying "Great photo" or "Cool"

Probably because critiquing a photo that someone has posted on Flickr may appear rude if they haven't actually requested critique (which people on Flickr haven't as it is not a critique site!)

If posting here and specifically asking for critique then you wouldn't expect a "Nice" or "I like it" comment. That is the difference.

Maybe there should eb a section of Flickr for critique but I don't think that is what it is about. It is more of a social media site that involves pictures as it's main point of interest.

I think you have hit the nail on the head

there are a number of groups on flickr that are intended for those wanting critique other than a flashy group icon.. I think you get what you want from it.. I dont add to the groups that ask you post 1 and comment 5 etc and only have a group of contacts that actually do.. contact :)

I couldnt take to 500px or google+ so just stick to flickr these days..

Whenever I looked at 500px I thought I had found the doors to HDR hell - yeah, I hate HDR :-)

Clearly that is subjective and may only be the landing page but I didn't go through those doors...

I have got accounts with flickr, 500px, pbase and wordpress and like the ability tok customise the look of both pbase and wordpress so use them most.

I'm not keen on the way flickr mess with photo quality and their interface is not great but they have plenty of groups which I like. I did not really take to the interface of 500px and the way they square off photo thumbnails.

I use Pbase. It's a paid for site but is really cheap.

Plus I also have my own websites.

With Flickr you only get what you want from it once you figure out what it is you want, figure out where to find it and put the effort in to get something back. There really is nothing quite like Flickr, but it can be daunting and leave users feeling alone and anonymous amongst the huge popular groups and the small closed clique groups (most of which don't even show-up to non-members).

If you're looking for feedback you need to find a small feedback orientated group where you can participate in the group community. Cut-back on the dump'n'run theme groups and the super-sized groups.

When I look at 500px, I just can't see the community aspect. It feels even colder and more anonymous than Flickr.

With the right group (or two) om Flickr you can get a lot of useful support and feedback. But finding these groups takes time, and as with all community-based forums you will get more out the more you participate and put in. for example, if you want critique you'll get more if you learn how to give critique yourself and give some to others. Put out a lot os "nice shot" and "that's sharp" and that's pretty much what you can expect back.

Thanks for your tips - I've briefly registered with 500px but nothing more yet and I'll investigate the other options too. Thanks again :)

I think maybe I need to learn to play the Flickr game better, I have just made sure all my images are in sets but think coffee is order before I start tagging the untagged

I made some comments in this thread about getting the most out of Flickr, or how to play the Flickr game better as Jen put it :D

I enjoy the variety on Flickr but find all the 'awards' comments quite frustrating - I'd rather they actually just made a comment rather than copy and paste the same old junk.

Having said that, the groups on flickr are excellent and I've solved many a problem there!
