Seems flickr has added the ability to upload videos now, hopefully it wont turn it into youtube :| seems only people with pro account can add videos and the max length is 90 seconds, will be interesting too see how it goes, I guess :)

EDIT - just given it a whirl, seems to work quite well :)

Mixed blessing I think. Off to follow your link............

hmmm, yes i saw that this morning.
I think it may be having an identity crisis...
hehe

Its interesting. The one problem I have is that I'm a rubbish videographer. I don't see much point posting tacky videos shot on my phone next to photos that I've spent time and effort perfecting. I don't have that skill set for video. However, its not like its stopped some people posting brilliant videos. But I think the 90 second limit is good. Short creative videos.

The thing is that Youtube, as a community, is horrible. Have you seen a lot of the comments on there? Flickr won't be full of pirated movies or your latest fad video either. It nicely integrates into the site and you don't have to use it.

i have to agree pete. they are mostly horrid little people on there who get off on saying ugly things.
It is not nice :(

I saw this morning as well.

WHY!!!

Could work out okay really but I don't really see the point. Flickr has always been about photos, hense the name...Flickr!

I can just see it going down the pan as there are some stuff already on Flickr which is quite bad, videos could make it even worse! :(

Or, it could just be adding to the 'graphers community. Videography and photography have always had a bit of a thang going on, ya know ;)
hahaha
I really hope it workks out, because i love flickr, i dont want it to change too much!
:)

I think this is about the YAHOO thing though Pete, it's an opportunity that they are trying to tap into... Have no interest in Video on FLICKR per se, why not create Vidr.com instead...

Some of these auto-play as well, slowly down my connection I suspect !

Consult the community before implementing... Works well here !

You can turn off the auto play in your options apparently.

Not following you there. Maybe I'm having a blonde moment but Flickr relates to photography how?

I do agree that Yahoo may have played a part in this, but then if they were trying to compete with Google's Youtube why not go for full video support instead of forcing people to be a little bit more creative? I saw a video on the Flickr blog today that was really lovely. The concept of the long photo. Its interesting.

The other issue about creating yet another video site is that you have to rebuild the user base. Everyone on Flickr would have to sign up, get used to how the site works and such. This way all you have to do is upload it and share with friends.

Flickr has always had a great community, and they do listen to their users. They beta tested video support amongst a select group of users. They've also been hinting at video support for a long time, possibly over a year so the community has had its chance to be vocal.

Theres a small part of me that is tempted to get into video. Its only 90 second shorts. So its not like I have to film lots. Its nice.

haha interesting, I have just written something very similar to what you have said on the Manchester Flickr group Pete :p

I am really interested to see what appears :)

its a shame i think, flickr doesn't need video, it'll just turn into youtube or something crappy like that. i hope i'm wrong of course.

They could have kept it totally separate I think. I joined the group chewy ;)

It's a strange one really, Flickr for me is all about photography and in my opinion should remain so, the fact that these videos get mixed together with the photographs is the main bug bear at the moment, if they seperated them and had exclusive searches and seperate Explores then I wouldn't mind so much but mixing them all together dilutes the pleasure of Flickr, the essence of which is PHOTOGRAPHY.

I imagine that if people are vocal enough there will be an "ignore video" option.

Think the key thing here is ''select'' group of users .... No need to rebuild the user base, they very quickly changed to the Yahoo ID login- so same would apply..

Hope they introduce the ''ignore'' or ''i don't want to see video'' function soon...

This is no more than corporate bandwagon stuff.... Nice promo on the flickr homepage !

Already a few of my friends have uploaded videos. I really do think that Flickr have done a good job here.

You look at your friends recent work and videos are seamlessly integrated. They work and act just like photos, only they're a bit longer. If they did YaVideo or something then they'd have to build a whole new site, a whole new friend system, a whole new everything. I'd have to join yet another social network, add all my friends again and such. I wouldn't. I'm not active on Youtube despite having an account. But already I like Flickr's implementation. Its there, its not getting in the way and its simple. Theres no giant fad monster stomping through your friends photos going "RAAAAA! VIEW ME! WATCH ME! I'M AN ORRIBLE VIDEO!!! RAAAAAAA *SNORT*" Its nice :)

The other thing is, and I'm not sure how many people here are aware, but Flickr has a far far bigger problem than 90 second video. There's a ton of copyright material on there that shouldn't be. There's also an incredible amount of porn and some very very weird groups. It really has a dark side to it so to say that 90 second video is going to kill Flickr is a bit strong. Its surviving despite its darker side.

And there are 9000ish members of a group who don't want to see video...

But there is a giant fad monster who hasn't given me the choice to choose if I want to see it. That's my issue. Ask all the members, especially those who PAY to be a member!

Just give me the ignore ALL video function and I'll be just fine.

Same on youtube - Although a much wider problem regarding copyright there.

Some people call a picture a flick. Thats what I think anyway. I'll look at Google ;)

The only time I've heard people call it that is when they mean a movie, so in that regard Flickr fits perfectly for movie sharing :)
