T'is a shame when these structures burn down, but as already pointed out, it's usually only a matter of time...

And HOW do we manage not to put the fires out? How much water do they stand in? :bonk:
Depends how much of a water supply there is, might not even have a water supply ( hydrants ) at the end of the pier and even with salt water, portable fire pumps and even the main pumps on fire appliances can only 'lift' water so high ie: depending on how high the pier is above the water surface would dictate as to where the fire service could use it or not. Plus these structures are traditionally wooden no?
If no life risk then wouldn't be a high priority to put fire crews too near it either.
EDIT : Here is a quote from the BBC news page
"About 60 firefighters tackled the blaze, which they said was already well alight by the time they arrived. Police said the pier was "completely gutted".
Investigators will look into the fire's cause later but said it was too early to say if it was started deliberately.
A spokeswoman said 10 fire engines, a major incident support unit, a mobile fire station and two aerial ladder platforms had been sent to the scene.
Fire crews have been pumping water from a boating lake a mile away to help control the blaze but said the structure had been completely destroyed."
At 25m per length of hose, having to pump it from a mile away will give you some idea as to the logistics of tackling a fire that is already well established, and all that hose has to be run out by hand!
Coincidence that the other burnt down a few weeks back, maybe, I think insurance might be a better word

of course every UK Fire Service has that available and they just morph out of the sky in an instant, I wonder if they fly in the dark

Its not that daft an idea a couple of sea planes stratigially placed around the coast capable of "water collection"
could cover most of the UK its not that big an island after all and I guess a half decent pilot could fly in the dark

yip, be nice wouldn't it, big problem the UK Govt aren't too keen on giving too much ( make that any
)money to the Fire service, ok pilots can obviously fly in the dark however not even in the good ole US do they put fires out by bombing them in the dark.Thing is, the fire bombing planes 'pickup' their water by flying down onto the water surface and skimming it, now that, in the dark I would like to see

How did you guess, I take it by gripe you mean at the Govt, he he sorry I had my old strike head back on for a minute there, I have to admit to being disappointed that Ahmir Khan was fighting the wrong Prescott at the weekend, mind you going by his showing he might have struggled against the ex deputy leader too

Thank you, not that difficult really, you just have to watch and not get kebab sauce on yer shirt as it doesn't come out easy ( before anyone else says it )
Best job in the world, or well it used to be, five years to retirement and can't wait, which is sad really, we have become too good at our job now, it's more prevention than reaction,( piers not our specialised subject of course ) and go to fewer and fewer fires, but that of course is good for the customer just makes it bloomin' boring for us, however there is nothing else I'd rather do except maybe fluff
for Halle, Salma, Charlize, Angie ... IF they switched genres .....
