I've been wanting the new PS CS4 for some time. I bid on an auction for the new version boxed and sealed apparently. It seemed like a good saving on the list price. Having looked at the previous auctions for the seller, it was evident that he was shill bidding with at least a couple of accounts, but the price was still within what I was prepared to pay.

Well time passed and the price rose to what I still considered acceptable. I was "winning" until the last few minutes. I was outbid with less than a minute to go. I bid again, but was beaten by a higher automatic bid and I let it go.

So what am I complaining about? I bid on an auction where I knew the guy was padding the bid prices right?

Yes.. but... what really ticked me off was that the item was re-listed in under 4 minutes!! Talk about blatant. I went through a couple of scenarios in my head... perhaps the buyer pulled out. Maybe a buyer bid on two and didn't need the second. Even if this were the case, it would take a couple of emails to resolve.

Somewhat incensed, I emailed the seller. I kept it very polite but asked what had happened and that an item I bid on had been relisted very soon after the auction ended. His response?

"i have over 1000 of these and thought you might like to buy one before the price goes up.many thanks"

And that was that. I thought about it for a while. Once my annoyance at the seller's flippant answer subsided, I decided that he/she was only partly to blame.

People will play the system when the system is designed to let them. Ever since ebay decided to anonymise the id of the bidders, the system became even easier for fraudulent bidders/sellers. Higher bids means higher fees for ebay. Why would they fix something that will harm their profits? Sorry if this has been ranted about many times before, but I needed to get this off my chest.

And one more thing - who the hell owns over a 1000 copies of PS CS4 boxed and sealed?? Very lucrative and very dodgy. I was hoping for a genuine version I can register.

And.... breathe....

Thanks very much for the heads up Andyman. It wasn't the same seller - it's a different seller. I'm sure there are dozens more of them. It was the boxed and sealed bit that confused me. Sophisticated fakes for sure. Arrrgh.

I was amazed by the one I received. I honestly wouldn't have suspected a thing from looking at it. Someone somewhere had obviously gone to a lot of trouble to fake this stuff.

Personally now I don't think I would touch any form of discounted software. I have been lucky in the past. My current MS Visual Studio 2005 was bought on Ebay and was a genuine bargain. Maybe this made me far too trusting.

Having experienced the software market on Ebay now though I'd steer clear and only buy from a proper shop.

The sad thing is that since my experience with that seller his feedback shows that he's continuing to con others.

Andy.

So report him to both ebay and Adobe for selling fake software. Even if you personally don't have the proof, it seems fairly obvious. At least it will inconvenience him for a while.

I reported the one I almost bought from but as above, I expect he will still be trading and conning folks a few months down the line.

Yup, I've reported him to Ebay and what do you know.... they've done naff all about it. He's just relisted the same MS Office that completed earlier today.

Adobe have taken a little more interest its true. They want the counterfeit software sent to them as evidence so they may open a case on him.

Andy.
