As some of you probably know, I recently abandoned my old cheapo Epson V330 flatbed scanner and dived into the world of 35mm negative scanners (Reflecta proscan 7200).

So I thought I would post a few comparison shots between the two. Admittedly,I have only used the Cyberview software that came package with the new scanner, but with my next pay cheque I am planning to upgrade to Vuescan. This should give me more controllability over my scanning.

I haven't carried out any post production on these images, the only difference is that I added a slight curve to the Epson scan before scanning, which explains the higher/deeper contrast. And the Epson adds a minimal amount of sharpening to the image as well. The reflecta scan had nothing else added.

Anyway, thought you may be interested in these as the detail/noise between the two is remarkable.

There are a few more scanned images on my blog (http://www.thetimechamber.co.uk/beta/blog/film-scanning-flatbed-vs-dedicated), but I am planning to purchase some IT8 samplings before I scan my slides/negatives fully.

Interesting...what annoys me about scanning colour negs is aliasing problem (and would think it affects B/W as well as some of my B/W negs look very grainy) i.e. grain (pixel dots or whatever they are called) showing through. I can reduce it with programs but it just makes the result more "digital". :(

Totally agree, it was the main reason why I switched from a flatbed scanner. The noise was just too much to be real, especially compared to some of the photos posted by others on here!
