You have to be a special kind of nuts to build your own rocket to check if the earth is really flat. Much easier, safer & cheaper to buy a seat on a commercial flight if you really need to check. Not as special though

This appears to have just been a proof-of-concept launch; his steam-powered rocket worked, and he didn't die coming back down.
However, it only has the range of a large firework, so he's planning to launch the next one from a high-altitude balloon.
Problem is, you need a pressure suit at those altitudes (remember the parachuting record guy?), and I don't know if he's planning to built one of those in his garage along with the rocket.

I also don't know what observations/tests/measurements he plans to make up there; apparently he won't say.

The old guy found a more interesting way to live his days than watching the telescreens. Its an interesting project even if the reason is completely daft.
