I have a couple of old flashguns from film days but I have read that they should be avoided with DSLR. Can anyone enlighten me? Do I run the risk of ruining my 20d?
 
It depends what they are.

Give some details and someone will be able to tell you everything.
 
Thanks for the response. Two flashguns: Sunpak Auto 170 and Helios 36 Auto. I have tried the Sunpak and it worked fine but I read somewhere that I risk 'burning' the 'lectrics on the camera so I have not used it since.

I hope I have provided the right info.

you'l need a multimeter.... there cheap as chips on ebay and the like - or borrow one from someone

But personally, I'd buy some wireless triggers as the flashguns will be much more useful off camera anyway.
 
Second the wireless triggers.....much safer with the possibility of the differing voltages, and also a much more pleasant look to the photos. You can buy Yongnuo wireless triggers on ebay for around £40 for a set, and they work perfectly. Look up Strobist.com for ideas on how to use them.....steep learning curve but worth it!

I am not by any means 'tog savvy. I have come back after a thirty year absence and of course it's now all new / digital.

Keep them, can always use them later on with some off camera strobe fun.

Put them in manual, and what you end up with is

1 - switch
2 - power

That's all you got. The remote trigger is the switch, and the flash lights up. It is very simple, it is nothing more to that.

If you check out Strobist.com it will explain in beginners terms about using the flash off the camera, and should help you understand what you can do with them
