Hi All,

I am looking at flash guns, SB-600 / SB-800 / SB-900. I have looked around online and there are some fairly generic reveiws that all seem to say the same things....600 is good, 800 is better, 900 is much better.

but I am struggling to find out what I would need and why the 900 is soo much better than the 600 as there seems to be limited information on the actual "main differences" (unless I am being a complete dope, which is more than possible) Even the reveiw section on here only has a reveiw for the 600 and the 900 and thats off the same person lol.

any help information or direction as to where to look would be great. As well as any cheap suppliers would be great.

thanks

:help:

My personal opinion will be SB800. SB900 is know to have a over heating problem to cause the flashgun to shut down. Some have no problem with the flash but so do.

I think is one of those hit and miss really. With SB910 coming out i would buy that instead of the SB900. If buying order modern I would look into SB700 and SB800

well the 800 and 900 are very expensive, so I am looking at a 600 but kinda wondering if there is a massive difference between the 2. I can get a used 600 for £160? and looking to see if its worth holding out for a bigger one?

I paid about 180 for my used SB800. It was like new. I would say go for the 800 if you can find one.

I use SB800s (3 of them) having previously used SB600s. They are more powerful - GN125 rather than GN98 and can be used as commanders. They also allow a 5th AA battery to be used which speeds up recycle times. The SB800 also allows you to tilt the head down by 7 degrees which can help with close up shots. MPB who advertise on here often have them in for around £220

Thanks for the extra info, are any other flashes that are worth lookin into? Ive only ever really looked at the SB's ???

You might consider Yongnuos.i have 3 and for what they are consider them good value for money

Just got myself a nissin di622 mk 2. More powerful than a sb600 and less than half the price. Does wireless ttl as well. Have to say I'm very happy with it.

I use a Metz AF51 flashgun. I think thats the model name, i can't remember. It does the job perfectly fine on what i shoot but i want to upgrade in the future to a Nikon one.

Thank you both,

Rapscallion: so is this more inline with the sb800?

Have either of you used any of the SB range? How do feel they compare with these?

Thanks

The answer is yes there is a huge difference between the SB600 and SB900 I have both.
the flash range for one-SB900 easier setup- SB900 can be used as a master the SB600 can't, just to name a couple of things

Bazza

IMO What you get depends on what you are going to use it for:-
In my case i just wanted a replacement for the inbuilt flash on the d5000, so I went for a cheapo one from hong kong ( £40 ish ), and a cable from sevendayshop.

Soz cant remember make but its a chinese company.
It works in ttl mode which is all i wanted. It is supposed to work as a slave but mine breaks if I select that mode :'(, but I don't care, i dont need that functionality.

btw i would never buy anything again from HK again, more complicated that a filter ( and then not even for that ), support is pants:thumbsdown:

Hi bowsa,

the nissin feels well made. Not sure how to compare with the relevant nikon as the Nissin is a simple powerful flash. I actuallly prefer it to my 600 for it's simplicity and power. Id say it is a little bigger than the 600 also. It also has a pc sync port and 3.5mm mini jack, neither of which the 600 has.

It has quite an in-depth review here:
http://speedlights.net/2010/12/22/nissin-di622-ii-review/

Note that they tested the power output and found it to be more powerful then the sb900, which is triple the price!

I had the SB-600 and recently replaced it with the SB-700, the 700 is so much easier to setup and use, on and off camera. I only needed something that was better than the pop up flash so just a casual user and didn't need the power of the SB-900.

I have both the 800 and the 900, they are both great flashes, but I always pick up the 900 first every time, the ui is a lot better, as for the over heating issues, I personally have not had an issue, but when you investigate on the net it seems to be a choice of battery that can effect it. all that said I still wouldn't get rid of my 800.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the SB700 more.

I have 2x SB900's and an SB600. If I had the money to replace them, i would get 700's. You get 95% of the functionality of the SB900, for £100 less and in a smaller lighter package.

*edit* just checked amazon and there is a £10 difference between the ageing SB600 and the newer SB700. I think you'd be silly to get the SB600!
