Hey :)

Im in search of a new flashgun for my Canon 400D

The only decent ones i seem to find is the 430EX (roughly £190) and i was just wondering if there were reasonable priced flashguns around?

Or even better, is the 430EX worth 190 squid or anyone have one?

:)

Have a look at the Nissin di622 Mk11.

im currently in the same boat looking for a flash for the 550d .. the canon ones are a little expensive for me and so im starting to look at Nissin and yongnuo.
Nissin seem to be the next best shot in terms of power and compatibility.. the yongnuo arent as powerfull and do have a history of poor compatibility so check whether its recorded as working with your particular model.. the plus side of the yongnuo is definitely the price!

ill keep an eye on this thread too!

Pete

I recently bought the Nissin Di622 (not the M2) and I'm really happy with the results…mind you 2 things you should look out for...

Can the flash do high sync (outside shooting in sunlight)
Can you use wireless triggers for off camera flash

If I had just that little more research I would have seen the Nissin DI622 will not support any wireless triggers..DOH! (Cable is fine)

just a few thoughts

Dan

You should find some used 430s (first generation) for around £100-120. I have no experience with third party flash units but I have a 430EX and can highly recommend it.

Original Canon flashes will ensure full compatibility with your Canon body. Plus they are very well made and will last many years if you take good care of it. Well worth the additional monies.

If you want just basic bounce and are not in need of a ton of power, have a look at the cheaper 270EX II. The new 320EX looks interesting as well but it's got a manual zoom head (but does full bounce and swivel). It's also got an LED video/modelling light as well.

Unless you need the LED light the 320EX seems pretty expensive at around the same price as the 430EX II

I have a 430 EX MK I but its not compatible with my 5DMKII So I'm looking to upgrade to either a Nissin or 430EX II.

I have a 430EX (original mark I) and a 5D II and they work together perfectly with full E-TTL II functionality. What compatibility issues are you having?

I've no idea why it's not working. When on p mode the zoom isn't working and just fires a full belt of power!

I went into the menu for flash configuration but it says it's not supported. Im on firmware 2.08 which I think is the latest version.

Help appreciated as I'd rather not buy another one as it's a great flash.

Is the flash set to manual maybe? What is shown on the flash display LCD?

The camera menu control of external Speedlites is only supported on the newer 430EX II and 580EX II models but the older ones are still fully compatible with the latest EOS bodies - you just can't control all functions directly from the camera, that's all.

Try other modes. In Av and Tv, it will use the flash in fill mode.

Cheers

That doesn't sound very good at all. Have you tried cleaning the contacts? Tried it on a different body?

I haven't tried it on a different body, I will though. I jut took a few shot son the phone see below. The message says "this menu cannot be displayed. Incompatible flash or flash's power is turned off."

No the flash is set to P, I've tried Av & Tv but still the flash doesn't zoom and I'm not getting E-TTL II it just fires out the full blast!

I'll play again but i'll not hold out much hope!

I don't think the flash has a 'P' setting. Do you mean that the camera's exposure dial is set to 'P'?

The flash can be set to either manual (indicated by an 'M' on the flash's LCD display) or automatic (indicated by 'ETTL' on the display). That's the first thing to check. Also check that it is pushed all the way on and that the contacts on the foot and the hotshoe are clean.

Does the flash zoom when you control it manually? Does it indicate that the flash coverage is changing (i.e. the "Zoom xxmm" read-out changes)?

In any case, by design, the 430EX and and 5D MkII are compatible. If they're not working together, one of them is broken. Do you have another flash or another camera that you could test with?

One other thing to check is the FEC setting.

I'm pretty sure the 430EX I does not support control through the camera's menu system. It's the same thing with the 580EX I. Only the MK II versions have that feature. It's not a question of incompatibility at all. The flashes simply don't support that function. In all other respects they should work as expected.

That sounds like your flash is not making proper contact with the flash hotshoe. That is especially likely when in portrait orientation. Does the flash work correctly in landscape mode? Are the contacts clean? Is the flash properly tightened down? Is there play between flash and camera?

If you can't fix it the easy way, with a quick clean and a fiddle then I think you'll find something has come slightly loose somewhere. I'm not sure if it's on the camera side or the flash side, but a bit of work with a screwdrive will be required to fix the problem. You'll need to research for yourself as I don't have any links handy.

I would maybe try the Yongnuo ones from Ebay, they are pretty cheap for the TTL models and mine seems to work pretty well. Its all depends on your budget of course

i'm waiting for the new 320ex i'm interested in the led light for video work

regarding the flash problem, get an optical / alcohol wipe don't unfold it and clean the slots on each side of the hot shoe. and the contacts on both the flash and hot shoe. just make sure everything is switched off when doing it.

i just bought a youngno (cant spell it right) after having post a similar post to yours, I still havent received it so i cannot judge, however i heard that for what they cost they are excellent flash, they are available in both canon and nikon version. Obviously it depends on how demanding you are and if you are prepared to spend more than double for a canon, and be sure it will be fine. IMO i am willing to risk on a cheaper flash and use the spare money to invest on quality glass, but i might be wrong. I am gettiing a yn 467
