Hi Guys and Gals,

I have just purchased a Panasonic GH5 but have absolutely no idea what’s the best flash to pair it with, any and all suggestions would be gratefully received.

Andy

Either a Godox TT350o or Godox TT685o from Amazon, depending on whether you want small or large. The Godox system really comes into its own when you want multiple off-camera flashes but those two work well as singletons and are excellent value.

It might be worth keeping an eye out for secondhand Olympus or Panasonic flashguns, sometimes these are available at very reasonable prices, sometimes hopelessly overpriced, but they are very well made. I recently bought an Olympus FL50R for £69 from LCE which I thought was good value. A list of compatible flashguns, lenses and accessories for the GH5 can be found here.

A second hand Olympus flash for the same price as a Godox that is 5x as useful isn’t ‘good value’ in my books.

The Godox TT350 is a lovely match for smaller cameras, builds into the best flash system on the market and if more power is required the TT685 is the one.

Where do you obtain these flashes from Phil? The UK Godox shop lists the TT685 at £129 and the TT350 lists at £90, each with a 2 year warranty and excluding the wireless transmitter, which is another £34. I can see they are cheaper on the likes of Ebay and Amazon, but are these being shipped from China to order?
I know that the Olympus/Panasonic optical flash system is never going to be as good as a wireless arrangement, but the R versions of the flashes with work directly with the onboard flash of virtually any Olympus M43 camera and later Panasonic models from the GH3 onwards, straight out of the box. The Nissin i40 for M43 will also play nicely and is especially compact, lightweight and with a brilliantly simple beginner friendly interface, some are appearing secondhand and my wife uses one on her Lumix G3.

Out of curiousity, I weighed my FL50R which Olympus claims weights 385 gms without batteries. Mine actually weights over 500 gms with the included diffuser and batteries, there's no denying this is a sturdy and heavy unit but might withstand a few knocks reasonably well.

Amazon, though there are other options.
I’d avoid the Godox shop as it’s not official and is pretending to be.

I've bought all my Godox kit from Amazon but I make sure it's fulfilled by Amazon, whatever the seller. I usually pay £1.99 for next day delivery to my local Amazon Locker and haven't been let down yet.

@HarveyM
The TT350 is 200gm without batteries, and includes a radio transmitter and receiver.
