I tend to do mostly landscape photograph but some candid stuff if i'm at weddings etc. I currently use the pop up flash on my D40 but wondered (what with Christmas coming and all that) whether to get a proper flash. I was looking at a Nissin one which the nice man in the shop advised was fine for beginners (it was a mid range one (about £100-£150 i think).

So, would it be worth my while buying a flash and does anyone have any better suggestions around that price range?

Cheers,

You'll find a decent flash will be a huge improvement over the built in flash.

I've been very impressed by Nissin flashes (which tend to be much cheaper than the manufactueres own models) and reviews seem to be very good.

Otherwise the Nikon SB400 is a decent flash and nice and compact on the D40 - it doesn't have many features but is a good performer.

I've recently got a SB400 and have been very happy with it. Being able to bounce the flash has improved my photos and its very pocketable

Have a look see if you can pick up a second hand sb600 I would think you could pick up one for £150 ish. It is a great flashgun. Sb400 can only be bounced off the ceiling when the camera is in landscape orintation.
