Me again with another silly question.......

Im looking at purchasing a hotshoe flash for my nikon D5000.

As a beginner to photography, do I need a TTL flash (extra money) or will a manual one do? I understand that a TTL flash takes readings from the camera (using shutter speed, ISO and apperture) rather than its own sensor and so better reads the situation.

Ive been looking at the Yungnuo 560 for the time being. Any users here and is it any good?

the nikon sb400 would be a good option, its small, lightweight, and gives great results.
i bought mine off ebay new for £70.
 
I would look at something like the SB600 as you can tilt and swivel the head, use TTL or manual. The SB600 can also be triggered off camera (not sure if the D5000 has this function though?). The SB600 tends to fetch around £120 ish on here.
 
I haven't got access to the classifieds on here yet!! :( but can't wait to!

£120 is out of my price range unfortunately!

No love for the yungnuo? Or is it cheap tat??
 
Have a look at the Jessops 370AFD as well. Supports manual, TTL and can tilt and swivel. Also has slave capability, as you don't have a commander mode on the D5000 you can fire the flash wirelessly with the onboard flash. Can be had for as low as £40 here and on eBay. Brand new about £75ish.
Nice little unit to start off with. Many will say its too cheap and flimsy but I find it ok.

How about a used Nissin Di622 Mk.1, you should be able to get one for around £60. I have loved mine and even though I have upgraded to a Nikon SB600 I find I still use the Nissin more.
 
I have the yonugu 560 mk 2 and can recommend it.

I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert or have used any others to compare with, but the build quality is good ttl works perfectly with it and it tilts and swivels.

the 560 mk2 does not have TTL............. the 565 does though

i have a 560 and primarily use it in manual mode and it is very good.
with yongyuo flash guns you get alot of bang for your buck just dont get the build quality of canon.

the 560 is a good first purchase flash gun and learn to use in manual then use it as a slave or fill flash in the future and purchase a TTL flash for on camera.

:plusone: for the Nissin. I've also got a couple of SB600's too and prefer the Nissin.

Is TTL that important or is it kind of like using 'auto' mode on the camera....you don't really learn anything??

The 360 AFD is on sale in Jessops at the moment for £59 so might take a punt on that!!!
 
Sort of it just means you may have to adjust the flash strength a few times until you are happy with the exposure, so if you got time to do that then there no problem and setting a flash is by no means hard.

Don't get the jessops one, you get more light from a candle if your ok with manual get the yongnuo if you want TTL get the yongnuo 565 or the nissin you won't go wrong.

TTL is good for on camera flash, not so good for off camera.

You really want to get used to just using a hotshoe mounted unit and then move onto off camera flash and then worry about anything after that.

As mentioned Definitely go for a flash head that has some form of bounce it's so much more flattering with softer light and less harsh shadows.
