Hi, i have just got the yn465 flash for my Nikon d3100 camera. I have read the instruction book and understand the basics from the manual. Does anyone have any recommendations of guides and tutorials to work through to build my knowledge in a practical way.

At the moment I don't have the option to take it off the camera but will soon have wireless triggers for it.

Any help would be appreciated.

you might like to look at (google it)

lighting 101

and

lighten up and shoot

these are really helpful and inspiring, especially if you are getting some triggers ;)

You'll find lighting 101 on www.strobist.com

I'm in the same boat as yourself and that site is an extremely good place to start.

A colleague at work has also recommended "The Hot Shoe Diaries" as a good book to use.

Hi Karl, just wondering how the wireless triggers are working with the D3100?
I was hoping to try 'off camera flash' but assumed the lack of Commander Mode on this camera would complicate this technique.

Thanks for your help,
Rams

I have a YN-560 flash for my D3100 and recently bought RF-603 triggers. Put a trigger on my camera and attach a trigger to the flash and voila! It works! I'm not sure how your YN-465 would differ to my YN-560 but I would imagine it would work in a similar fashion.

I also got another set of triggers sent accidentally (bonus!) so I can use them for another flash if I decide to buy or using it as a wireless shutter.

I agree, both great sources; get some cheap radio triggers for the flash + camera and work your way through the tutorials by David Hobby, it will improve your pictures rapidly!
