Hi,

Im pretty new to photography and have a cheap set of flash lamps which came with a remote trigger which I use on my Canon 50D and one remote receiver which I then wire across to another light. Ive been having fun playing with these to see the different effects I can obtain but as mentioned it is a cheap set. If I set the shutter speed to anything faster than 1/200 I start to get black lines in the image as well as the trailing 5 meter cable between lamps.

Can anyone that's had experience with triggers recommend a mid range set I can use on my 50d that I can wireless trigger my 3 lamps(via the 3.5 plug).(I do plan to upgrade these in the future by they will have to do for now). I know you can control some systems from the 50D menu, but i`ve not had chance to get upto speed with this.

Thanks all, Lee.

That's the flash sync speed of your camera. If you want to shoot with a faster speed than that you'll need to be using speedlights with high speed capable triggers or specialist flash gear like the new Lencarta ones.

Why do you need a faster sync speed? std flash sync speeds are suitable for all but the most specialist shots.

Thanks Gents, useful information.

Re the sync speed, I dont need a faster just playing and noticed anything faster than 1/200th you start to get issues, wondered if its the cheap trigger, best way to learn and now I know :)

Cheers, Lee.

Probably. With a fast trigger you should get 1/250sec without banding on a Canon 50D, certainly with a hot-shoe gun. With most studio flash, it's better to drop that slightly to prevent shading at the bottom (a slightly darker band, but not black). See page 114 of handbook.
