One of the problems people seem to encounter with certain flash triggers is that they reduce your camera's effective sync speed. This can be irritating if you're trying to overpower the ambient light with your flashes. Some triggers are reportedly worse than others, so I decided to test it out. I evaluated the Pixel Soldier (TF-372), Phottix Strato (Nikon), Yongnuo RF-602 (Nikon), MeiKe MK-RC7 and Aputure Trigmaster and found the following results:

For reference: the normal sync speeds of the Nikon D700 and D40 are 1/250 second and 1/4000 second respectively.

If you want to buy some cheap triggers, these statistics might be something worth considering. I don't know if the results will be the same for Canon cameras.

If you are interested in a few more details, there is more information about this test here.

Thanks for the heads up David, happy with my RF-602s so far but good to know there's some faster kit left in the budget department.

I wonder if with the current video DSLR boom we'll see the return of CCD sensors (which don't have to be 'scanned' when read) and electronic + mechanical shutters like in my 1D which can flash sync (unofficially) well past 1/2000s.
