Hi

I seem to have lost the sync cables that came with the rf602 triggers, does anybody know what type of cable I need to connect the receiver to my 580ex2? Seems like a stupid question but can't work it out looking at various ones online!

Also am I right to think that I might be able to get consistently higher sync speeds (1/200) on the 5dmk2 as opposed to 1/160 when using them normally.

You don't need a cable to connect the receiver to the gun - slip it in the hot shoe :thinking:

I use RF-602 with a 5D2 and 580EX and you can just about get away with 1/200sec at lower power settings, like 1/8th and lower (if the transmitter is in the hot shoe, not the PC socket). At higher powers I get very slight banding. But I use 1/160sec anyway, just to be sure - makes no odds.

You can't go any higher than at. If you want off-camera high speed sync, you need to use E-TTL mastering. RF-602 won't do it.
 
Yeah I was just hoping for 1/200 - 1/250, using 200mm is pushing it at 1/160th. When I get my 70-200 is2 it won't be as big an issue though. Wonder if the Phottix strato's would be better or if its a 5d2 issue?
 
It's the 5D2. It has an x-sync ceiling, as do all current DSLRs with the focal plane shutters.

The Pocket Wizard Flex/Minis improve it a bit, like half a stop or so, by pushing the sync right to the edge of the timing window. It's a useful increase, but the 5D2's shutter is quite big and slow and doesn't benefit as much as say a 7D which can be pushed up from 1/250sec to 1/400sec. PWs are not cheap though.

If you want higher, then high speed sync is the only answer. Which works really well, but there's inevitably a substantial loss of power so that only works at close range. If you need high flash power in bright ambient light, the best way to do it is to leave the flash in normal sync mode and keep the shutter speed down with ND filters.
 
Cheers, think i'm going to buy a Hoya ND8 filter in the near future for a start.. will be essential when I get a Sigma 50 1.4 too. May also use the 1dmk2N more for day time stuff.
 
There is another way. If you need both a high shutter speed and loads of flash power, you can throw money at it like this guy Dave Black using eight guns in a rather cool rig ;) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNDAINwhTWU He gets some pretty special results with it, too.
 
Radio poppers / Pocketwizards are the answer really... just £££££
