Yes
Am I right in thinking the test button on a flashgun will output the light ratio as selected on the gun?

I.e if in manual and set at 1/8 it will output 1/8?

What would it output if the flashgun was in TTL mode? I

Hi, The answer to the first part of your question is YES.

The answer to the TTL mode part of your question is. The flashgun will almost certainly output a full flash until it is connected to a camera that it is dedicated to via the hotshoe or via a dedicated cable connected to the hotshoe and activated by that camera.

Hope this helps.

On a canon it a custom function

Test Firing with Autoflash (1/32, Full Output)

So in ettl mode your choices are as above full or 1/32

Cheers for your answer.

As my cheap flash triggers cannot do rear curtain with ocf I was just planning on using the test button at the end of an exposure. I didn't have a chance to practice so thought of post on here.

I wondered whether it just out putted a generic small ratio each time.

Maybe if you told us what you want to achieve we can help.

Can you not trigger the ocf with the popup on camera flash set as rear curtain in s1 or s2 if you flash gun has s1 or s2?

I had numerous options Phil, and when I thought of this solution wanted to see what the flash actually outputs.

I'm just toying with different ocf to what I'm familiar with.

It just occurred that you'd need a very long SS to be able to comfortably predict the shutter closing.

I'd be looking at a few seconds.

Word writing with sparklers and then freezing the people is what I had in mind.

Might get chance to try it once this weather stops.

You would get almost identical results with 1st curtain sync, the only difference being that they'd appear to be at different ends of the words. It'd probably be a cleaner shot with a right handed person at the beginning of the word.

It's a common misconception that when we mix moving ambient lighting with flash that we need 2nd curtain sync. Lot's of people believe the flash exposure has to stamp on top of the ambient in order for it to work (not true).

The only time 2nd curtain sync is really necessary is when you want to be specific about a single direction of movement that you then 'freeze' - like a moving vehicle

Cheers Phil.

The idea I had was for bride to hold a sparkler for the duration of the shot, I'd walk in and light another sparkler from hers and write a word (Love etc) and the use the flash on her at the end to freeze her.

I got the idea from here

so was going to have a go at copying.

You don't need 2nd curtain sync for that, it's exactly what I said earlier, one of the most common misconceptions in modern photography. Just like any mixed ambient / flash shooting, there is no difference for this shot between 1st or 2nd curtain sync.

Bring some sparklers round and I'll show you with the 622C's ;)

I love the idea though.

622C's are my next purchase!

I understand what your saying but was just worried the 'ambient' picked up from the sparkler on the bride would show any movement the bride made over the exposure after the initial flash.

Where as 2nd would overlay that movement with a sharp frozen image of her.

It's one to have a play with, once the weather settles.

In exposure terms, first or second curtain won't make any difference there. But first curtain would make posing the couple and timing that important part far easier. I'd also take the sparkler from the bride and use that to write with, to save it burning a big hot-spot and spilling light on to the couple.
