As title really, I got to take some portrait pics of the wife the other day and they turned out pants, so looking to get my self a starter kit, but getting confused as to what to get

Do I need/want flash/strobe lighting or just lights to light the area, the more i read the more confused i get.

This will not be a thing that I will do lots of so not looking to spend on top notch gear to sit in the cupboard till the next time i decide to get creative.

Thanks

Should have mentioned I have a couple of Flashes, but they seemed very harsh and no matter how I tried I could not get them right, either shadows everywhere or blown everywhere

Google the strobist blog, the first port of call for using flashes!

Hi Spike,
with the flash you have, the light can be softened by using it through a brolly, or bounced from a brolly. A second tripod or light stand with the appropriate fitting will do for the brolly to be held by and its not expensive and easily stored. Also easy to sell again if you get fed up wit it. Take a look at the Lencarta products, they have loads to offer.
