Hi guys

I've done a quick search but can't find a definite answer. I'm looking for an extra flash stand for holding a speedlight / umbrella. I have one of the amazon ones (konig i think) and it's just not quite sturdy enough.. i also have a manfrotta but it's a beast and it's hard to use the flash below 3.5ft or so. Anyone have any recommendations for something in between price wise?

Cheers

they're plenty sturdy enough unless you're putting a massive umbrella on top of them. Just put a sandbag or similar weight on it when shooting outside :)

the more expensive ones are only 'more sturdy' with a speedlight because they weigh more :)

The konig ones? Any ideas where to buy sandbags? Could do with weights to hang off them rather than place next to the legs

proper sandbags aren't really designed for light stands like that, especially the smaller ones.

Lots of people use ankle weights from argos that velcro around the legs, I personally just have some of the generic promotional drawstring bags that you aquire that I fill with whatever heavy stuff I've got lying around. That or lean my camera bag or peli case on one of the legs. Or stand on it.

Ankle weights might be best. Press photographers don't look smart at the best of times but its nice to look.a bit professional :) even more so for pr! Reckon weights would look inconspicuous

You have experience with them? What are they like? Looking at one review:

'Doesn't close particularly small for carry around (if you do location shooting). Legs do not open particularly wide, can be a issue working outside with umbrellas and wind blowing gear over. '

Both pretty big issues for me!

For outside work I used to only use very light & portable stands (not that I ever did a lot of this type of work). On soft ground I used tent pegs on the stand legs and on hard ground sand bags. But I also carried (besides the pegs, mallet, sandbags) an axle 'choke' strap and various bungees. Recently, bought a couple of new sand bags at £10.50 each from eBay for indoor use.

Try searching for music speaker stands, they are usually cheaper and better/heavier as anything with "Photo" attached trebles the price!

Which manfrotta stand do you have Adam?

I'm in the same boat at the moment looking for a stand (though it will be my first try at buying/using a light stand) This was the one I was thinking about getting http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-5001b-nano-stand/p1031134

Any notes or advice on that stand anyone?

I noticed you use RF-602's in another post too Adam, how do you mount the stand, 602 and flash together? Looking for the best option here myself too..

Most speaker stands are made of steel, aren't very compact when closed and won't have a decent method of mounting any flash unit as they are designed for 'top hats' recessed into the speaker cabinet.

I have some umbrella adaptors bought from here. I'd only recommend them for light indoor use. Better of buying the ones from Calumet for about £24. The receivers then slot onto the cold shoe on those and attach to your flash with a hot shoe :)
