Although I've been doing photography for 50 years, I've done very little with flash. I have a D7000 and a D600 and I want to know can I use both of these to control 1 off camera SB910 flashgun in iTTL BL mode at the same time by which I mean my assistant holding the flashgun and me swapping cameras as necessary. I don't want to get into a discussion about why I'm using 2 cameras that's how it is at the moment. I've a feeling it won't work but I don't fully understand Nikon's CLS system. Any help appreciated.

This fairly complex article might be of some use.

The selection for ittl or ittl bl mode is made on the flash, only for those that support that selection, which includes the SB910. I know the D7000 has a commander capable flash as I have one, I suspect the D600 does as well. It might be that the camera adjusts to the bl mode after communications with the flash. I would expect that it shouldn't matter about swapping cameras, the SB910 will respond to any commander flash.

Yes, no problem. The pop-up flash can act as a Commander controller for remote flash. See handbook.

That's it. The cls system is fairly idiot proof so long as you use cls type flash. Sb 910 and 700 are great for that. And of course if your camera has the ability to act as a master. Even better if both can do HSS for outdoor work in bright conditions too.
