flash slowing camera down?

quick question that baffles me I have a canon eos 450d entry level dslr when I take photos continually with out the pop up flash it works a treat with the flash engaged its quite slow to fire off the next shot is there a particular reason why?

It's due to the power recycling time, best option would be to get a flash gun that has the capacity to recharge quickly and you'll find it will be far better as you can bounce the light.

Something like this will do as a starter depending on budget.

As above, it sounds like the recycle time for the in built flash to recharge thats slowing the FPS down for you.

There are various external flash guns available - depends on budget really.
 
Another cause could be Red-Eye reduction. :)
 
if its recycling time issues- use batteries with a higher mah rating.... im using 3000mah and 2900mah batteries and mine flashes recycle almost instantly for the first 15photos at least in a quick burst of them....

The OP has a 450D... :thinking:
Amazon has an Ultra High Capacity LP-E5 battery with at 1800mAh, most are quite a lot less capacity.
 
upgrade batteries in the flash gun for quickre recycle times..... i would never vary voltage through the actual body of the camera, as it would no doubt prove costly...


it could also be that your using a slow memory card, and its slow recording data on to it perhaps???

OP is not using an external flash gun...
 
of course because flash consumes the battery first and more importantly you have something called recycle time. it differs from one camera to the other (or flash to another if external ) but basically Recycle time is how fast the flash is ready to fire another blast of light after just firing. A flash cannot fire continuously. The capacitors inside have to regain energy and charge from the battery source in order to again be ready to fire.
 
thinking of slow recycling times and not external flashes... are you sure its the flash slowing your frame rate and not a memory card issue slowing down matters... when i started with my 1000d canon, the frame rate was abismal with the memory card that come in the package... the camera couldnt save the images quick enough- so i invested in some speed 10 memory cards and the frame rate speeded up loads- was wondering if this could be more the problem???

I have a 4gb card currently and thought that may be the issue so I swapped it for the memory card I have in my point and shoot camera ( this has a 8GB card and able to film in HDR )and had the same issue
 
Have you checked that red-eye reduction is not switched on? It can cause a delay on every flash photo.

How can people feel qualified to give advice on this with so little knowledge of their gear. If I was the OP I'd be totally confused by this thread.

Memory cards will work at quite high burst rates, even cheap ones, all of mine will do at least a second of 8 fps on the 7d (most of them much longer).
Even my best flashgun, on full power takes multiple seconds to recycle, it's the slowest thing in my workflow, by a massive factor!

The OP is lucky, using the internal flash stops him shooting until the capacitor is charged, for many of us, missed shots because the flash wasn't ready are a sad fact of life.

Although the best advice for the OP is; Stop using the built in flash - it produces crap light.

I will add to those who use external flash guns, an addon battery pack such as the cp-e4. Does make a massive difference on recycling time.
