if you use a flash you will get a shadow somewhere , its just a matter of where and if you can lose/hide it

great thanks for that peace of mind for now, the next thing is which flash gun to go for :-)

i dont need it for distance really but just simply to deal with the shadow caused by the pop up flash would prefer a nikon one though.

And get it off the camera completely if you can.

Even a short remote cord makes a huge difference.

SB600 or SB800.... then you can bounce it (if there is something to bounce it from).

A ring flash gives a almost shadowless look to photos but they come at a price! But just get the flash off the camera using cords or wireless and you can almost get rid of those bad shadows. It's all about where you have the flash ;)

YFG, just finding the old photo out the backups,

OK peope here we go, this was taken before the presure of gary and his gear

Personally I use a stroboframe flip system with my flash gun. This enables the flashgun to always be above the lens when taking photos and so the shadow is behind and below the subject. I find this gives excellent results especially when photographing people at weddings or parties. It is quite cumbersome to a degree and some wouldn't like it it still has TTL as I have an off camera lead mounted ontop of it with a tiny gitzo ball and asocket head for as much adjustability as you'll ever need

Bouncing helps if you've not got one of these or even an omni bounce to soften the effect but obviously lowering the guide number/flash coverage at the same time.

Metz also make a bounce diffuser which is a useful tool if the place you're taking photographs has a high or coloured ceiling

(TTL Sync Cord SC-28 will give you off camera capability)
