Can some one please tell me how i can get my SB800 to fire when not attached to my D80, can it be triggered remotely in conjuction with the camera, if so can you tell me the settings on both camera and flash.

Thanks...

on the D80 go to option 22 built in flash, move down to commander mode and select OK

now on the flash hold sel for 2 seconds scroll right and press sel, move down to remote and press sel, now it should work remotely make sure the built in flash is open

Hope this helps.

Tried that but it's not working. What am i doing wrong?????????:bonk:

HAVE YOU POPPED UP THE ONBOARD FLASH?

when the sb800 flash is off shoe do you see the word remote in the centre of the screen?

check you are using the same channel and group settings on both camera and flash, try this to help setup the flash:

Hold down ZOOM and "-" together to enter the CSM settings. That's why you see a gray "CSM" marking between those two buttons.
Press either the + or - buttons until you see an icon that looks like a wiggly Z-shaped arrow. This arrow refers to wireless communication between the flash and camera. When you see the wiggly arrow, press MODE to make it say ON.
Press ZOOM and "-" together to get out of the CSM mode. Even easier, just tap the power button to get back to normal operation. It won't turn off if you hit it while in the CSM settings.
Presuming you did this correctly you'll see "CHannel 3" and "GROUP A" displayed. If you see different channels or groups then press MODE to get one or the other to flash and then the + or - buttons to set them back to 3 and A.

make sure you have the same settings on the camera and you should be good to go :)

Thanks all for the help.
I now have it working, I noticed that the camera was set to channel 3 but Flash was set to channel 1, changed the Channel on the flash to 3
( matching the camera) and hey presto all is working..

Would anyone know, do I have to have the pop up flash, or is it possible to fire the flash off camera with out the pop up flash on camera.?.

EDIT, Ricky, just noticed your reply after i had wrote the above. Thanks.

regards

you need to have the pop up flash as it triggers the SB800, you should be able to actually turn it off in the commander settings so whilst you will see it flash in order to trigger the SB800, it won't actually be flashing during the exposure if that makes sense!

Yes absolutely, Just tried it once more and can now see what is happening.
Thanks once again..

Here I'am again.:bonk: Next prob.
Looks to me that i cannot stop the pop up flash from firing when in M,A,S & P modes, would this be the case or is there some thing I'm missing..

Thanks..

The pop up flash is supposed to flash in commander mode, that's how it triggers the SB800, but if you set the Built-in flash mode to "--" in the menu it shouldn't affect the photo (and remember to reset to TTL if you want to use the pop up flash by itself, otherwise you see it go off, but wonder why your photos come out dark).
