flash ring

What other light modifiers do you have? A ring light isn't the most versatile piece of kit.....

the flash on top of my camera :D

Do you mean the built in flash, if so it wont work as the o flash needs the sb 600/800/900 to fit on?

ok so to use a flash ring I would need to have a seperate flash already on top of my camera.

How much we talking about for something like that?

Just a ball park figure.

Anywhere from £175-325 if you want full ttl control, about £50-100 for something a bit more basic. Although Jessops do one for around £30 that's not too bad, you'd have to measure it to get the right model of ringflash though

Well the SB-600 goes new from just over £200.00. The others more.

There are non Nikon flash units available for much less circa £100.00 but the o flash will not fit on these.

ok but if I just get a normal flash , am I able to take that off the top and hold it in a different position?

gosh darn this is all so confusing.

So I can buy a flash and hold it in a diff position as long as I buy something else?

Yes....you need either a cable to connect the flash to the camera or a set of wireless triggers to fire the flash. Either option will cost around the £20-£25 mark, plus the flashgun of course.....

I'd reckon a cable might be a better place to start - coupled with a flash that can give basic ttl....

ttl?

(I apologise for any daft questions. Still new!)

I know I know! Just in case anyone thinks I wasn't joking

I am way beyond lost lol..

Link me to a cheapy on jessops please ..

so I kinda have an idea :D

They don't seem to have any of the Nikon version listed anymore...they do have a really basic flash available though....for £1.47 - Sauchiehall St seem to have one in stock....

EDIT: same one you already found

You're totally lost now....aren't you? :D

Not surprising really is it chaps?

Auzelia, ideally you want a 'dedicated' flash gun that will link up to the automatic TTL (through the lens) flash metering system in the camera. There are cheaper options, but this is by far the best and easiest to use.

Nikon's auto flash system, called CLS, is very good. You have a choice of several Nikon dedicated flash guns from £100 to £300. http://www.warehouseexpress.com/category/basecategory.aspx?cat03=3105&brand=168

You can use a flash gun on the camera, or off camera triggered either wirelessly by the on board flash, or via a connection cord. FlashInThePan will sell you one for about £18 I think, if you humour him ;) That is a very good price BTW, and he also has loads of other cool strobist stuff - reflectors, light shapers and things. See his post in the For Sale section here.

Fellas, I'm not an expert on Nikon flash. Will the on board flash trigger a remote gun? Please correct the above if I've got something wrong

If you have the right camera it will.
I'm not sure about the D60. The D80/90/300/700 do.

at the moment I just want a flash that wont leave a shadow in my pics.

I took some of my son today and depending on how I held the camera there was a definate shadow.

Im not sure why though im thinking of the lens being too long for the flash or something.

Though I do like the idea of the O flash, but I will come to all the "gadgets" once I have saved up money and learnt how to use the camera properly :D

Oh dear god!

I sound like im thick, but ..

Whats a Slave (or even a dumb one at that)

As the on board flash on your camera doesn't give full CLS flash control, you'll need the dedicated connection cord to link the camera and the flash, for full CLS auto exposure control.

do you have a sample Auzelia, of the shadow?

I get the impression you slightly confused on how it works, so just as a quick basics.(sorry if it is too simple).
Flashguns have a hotshoe attachment on the bottom, it clips to the metal bracket on top of your camera. your camera detects its there and will send the signal to fire the gun when you press the shutter. if you take it off the camera you need something to send the signal from the bracket on top of your camera to the flash(cable or wireless transmitters).
TTL is basically full auto flash, the camera decides what power to use . You do need a dedicated TTL flash to make it work though.

Was it a shadow in front of your son - that'd be when a shadow of the lens is cast when the subject's too close to the camera (especially apparent with a hood fitted). Or, do you mean a single shadow cast of the subject, like the sun does?
