Having used Av mode for several months I decided to start using Tv mode on my canon 550d. This has been going well and things are slowly kicking into place now. However, I have just started using manual mode which is great giving me more options to achieve correct exposure. I'm curious to know how if I can set up a picture for correct exposure and then pop up the flash how do I then get a correct exposure? Does that make sense?

The camera will do the thinking for you, just use the flash exposure compensation to adjust if needed. Brutal truth though is that the pop up flash will always be pants unless used for fill in av mode.

You set up aperture, shutter speed and ISO in Manual mode for the ambient light exposure. The flash exposure is still automatic to light the foreground subject "right". Your and camera's definition of right might differ, hence FEC or Flash Exposure Compensation which will adjust the flash power but not touch the ambient light exposure.

Of course you can also use an external flash in manual mode where you control both the ambient and the flash.. but it's not an easy juggling act if you're moving about and the light is changing.

Thanks for your responses. As above I only have the built in flash which in your living room is great but anything larger and it's pants. I will be getting another flash but there aren't enough birthdays in one year to get all these expensive things. My number one gripe with the built in flash is that you can't change the direction of the flash to bounce off a wall (unless you improvise with your hand or a piece of card)

what you might mean is that the flash will supply lighting which is dependent on distance and flash power...notwithstanding the synch speed for the shutter on a dslr is limited and you may not get the flash effect if you are using higher speeds
i use pop up flash for fill in eyes but as i am using programme/Av/Tv the camera will set the synch for me...thus over ruling my specifics for exposure
it makes sense what you say
cheers
