Flash question

I want to take some pics at my sisters 40th on Friday , so my good friend Alz123 was kind enough to borrow me his 430exII for the occasion .
I have tried a few test shots in the house with the 40d on Auto and the flash set to ETTL but am finding the skin tones are making people look like red indians . Any ideas anyone on what my problem is ?

Is your white balance set to Auto, or a different manual setting?

Try setting it to Auto, and try setting it to "flash" see if there is a difference.

for that sort of thing I always use a diffuser or use an elastic band to strap a 6x4 folded photocard to the head, rotated vertically.
