Flash problems

I've just upgraded from a Nikon D5000 to a D300s.

I've been using a Jessops AFD360 flash with the D5000 on the rare occasions that i've needed flash and it's worked OK.

When I've came to use the flash with the D300s it overpowers everything and I can only get a good exposure by using it in manual and by trial and error.

I've checked hotshoe connections and changed batteries several times but no change.

Is it time to buy a new flash?

If so considering I only use it very rarely which one should I get?

Cheers for any help.

Just a quick thought. Have you tried adjusting the flash exposure compensation on the camera. I'm a canon shooter so not sure about nikon but I would have thought there would be similar settings.

* Check that your exposure compensation is set to 0 (normal).

* Check the flash doesn't have an additional flash compensation that would mean too much power is being put out

*Set the camera to a lower ISO to see if this has an effect

*Point the flash at something with lots of different tones - it could be the camera mis-read the scene and blasted it
