Flash photography - how does that work then?

I am failing miserably to get my head around flash photography, and the time is rapidly approaching where I will need to make use of it, my sister in laws wedding to be precise. :eek: (no I'm not the official tog, but would like to get some practice in).

Can anyone recommend a good easy guide to get me started? Or even post the golden rules?

Next step is to find a flash unit, I was thinking of a 430ex or equivalent, but as I know nothing about guide values etc I'm really just blundering around in the dark ( no pun intended:D)

Any help, advice, guidance gratefully recieved. :thankyou:

MDOG MARK - the thing about flash is that you can control the light. Instead of taking pictures you can now MAKE pictures. You control the light instead of it controlling you - once you are in control you are the master of your own destiny - in other words you can do what you like.
 
If you want to really get into flash photography I would recommend reading www.strobist.com particularily the Lighting 101, and the Strobist DVD set is pretty good from www.mpex.com. Be careful though because it can be quite addictive :)

Anyone got any similar links for Nikon Speedlights? I have an SB600 and don't really understand its full functionality :thinking:

When I use flash I try to remember two things.

1) Never, ever use on camera flash. Ever.

2) You are working with two exposures in one image, the ambient/available light and the flash lit portion of the image. The ambient is controlled as always by changing shutter speed / f-stop and flash is controlled by f-stop only. Find out the ambient exposure then underexpose by one or two stops to darken the backgroudn but retain some detail. Now work on the flash portion of the image, adjust flash brightness in one of three ways. Move the flash closer to or further away from the subject, adjust the flash output or change your f-stop.

Remember, correctly expose the flash lit part and underexpose ambient.

A wee play is all it needs. Good luck.
