Flash Noob

Afternoon all,

I have a couple of questions as im a total beginner when it comes to getting the flash off the camera.

Equipment :

Canon 70D
Sigma 530 Flash
Yongnuo 565
Yongnuo 603 * 2


Now my question is will i be able to get both flashes firing?
I believe the 565 requires another flash to trigger it, will it trigger from the sigma when that
fires via the 603?

Im going to have some time playing this evening hopefully with water drops, am i correct in saying that the flash should be bounced
off the background, and use something colourful under the glass bowl?

I can now answer the first part. Sigma won't trigger the other flash

The Yongnuo will work as an optical slave, check the manual for settings.

The 565 will accept triggering in a number of ways, but if all your other flash setup is manual, you have it set as Slave S1 (ottomh) which is a simple optical slave. All the slave modes are explained in the manual

I had a read of the manual last night.

I currently have it set as Slave 1 on channel 1 which the camera is triggering.

I cannot see the options in the manual to allow another off camera flash to optically trigger it.

As the slave unit, when YN565EX is used, the wireless option of speedlite is set as SLAVE.
Setting method: long press on ZOOM for 2 seconds to make the OFF flash on the LCD screen, this means that it is
in the setting state. Use

and

buttons to select SL. The LCD screen display cn when [OK] button is
pressed at this moment. This means that it receives the wireless signal from Canon and Nikon at the same time.
Press ZOOM button again and <c n>,< CH > or < A > will flash. This means that it enters setting state of Canon
or Nikon wireless option, communication channel or slave unit. At this moment, use

and

buttons
to set slave unit c/n separately, number of communication channel （1，2，3，4）or slave group （A，B，C）,
then press [OK] button to confirm setting.

Ive pulled the trigger (pun intended) and bought another wireless trigger so both flashes will not sit on 603s

On S1, it's triggered by any other flash it 'sees'. So any manual off camera flash, studio flash or someone else's camera will set it off.

But if your camera is only firing one other flash using the YN603 then it's not your camera that is firing it, it's your other flashgun.

S1, optical slave
S2, optical slave ignoring pre-flash
Slave c Canon ETTL system*
Slave n Nikon CLS system*

*near IR line of sight triggering from either a camera Master flash or flash commander. (ST E2)

With Slave mode 1 and 2 it's not receiving 'wireless' signals, as above it's simple optical triggering.

The 70d would need the pop up enabled to be used as a Master using the ETTL system to control and fire it.

Thanks for taking the time to explain that.

I think i over confused things, i have just done as you suggested set 565 to slave and test fired my sigma - they both flashed. (all with the camera OFF)

I know where my problem was, i was getting confused with the settings in the camera, i can pair it as an external flash on the 70D where it asks for channels etc.
I now realise i don't need to do that and have needlessly ordered another trigger

So now when i test tonight ill have one YN603 on the camera, another on my sigma and my YN565 set to optical slave. If it all works ill have 2 flashes working together.

If it doesnt they are going out the window hah.

A 'spare' trigger isn't a waste, it'll come in handy at some point. The optical trigger is great indoors where the flashes can all see each other, but they won't work if you're in a large space and you have your 2nd flash 'hidden away' to use as a kicker light, and it's a bit flaky outdoors in the sun. Whereas a radio signal is always reliable.
