Hi. I'm beginning to favour the simplified approach to lighting portraits. Just one light at the front using a softbox or umbrella, and one light behind.

I shoot nearly all my photographs using manual settings on both the camera and flashes. I currently have a 5D Mk3, a variety of speedlights (a 430ex II, two Yongnou 585s and a couple of cheap manual speedlights) and a handful of RF603s.

I'm now getting sick of have to manually adjust the power of each light - especially if they're high up. I would like to be able to adjust the power from my camera. I would also like the option of occasionally using HSS and ETTL.

This leaves me with a couple of choices:
  • ditch my current speedlight and 603s, and buy a few YN568s and at least three 622s
  • ditch my 603s and buy a 622 TX and two 622s
  • ditch the whole lot and buy a YN-E3-RT and two YN600EX-RT
Any opinions?

Sell all your YN and other manual flashes, replace them with YN ETTL capable ones and YN622s to fire them.

I thought the YN622TX was still vaporware.

If you're serious about studio lighting, and particularly if you enjoy experimenting, then swap the speedlites for studio heads - with modelling lights, fast recycle, and remote control.

Entry-level heads are about the same price as speedlites and way better. Elinchrom D-Lites have built-in remote control and the new Lencarta Smartflash-2 also has an optional remote control/sync trigger.

The remote control is an optional extra with a single flash head, it's a literally free extra with all kits.

Thanks everyone. I do actually own a pair of Smartflash 200s. I use them when I'm at home. However, I do prefer to use speedlights when I set up in a client's home. Less wires for kids to trip over!

I think I will look at buying a pair of YN568s and at least 3 YN622s. Yes, the YN622C-TX is still vaporware, but I don't think it's necessary if I have the ability to control the flash settings through my 5D Mk3.
