Flash is too bright

Hi,

I got a Nikon D5000 with a Jessops 360 flash gun a week ago.

I have the flash and camera set to automatic, however it sometimes puts out that much light the subject is a complete whiteout.

An example of what is happening:
I had my subject stood with a solid wall behind her, there was no distance my camera could have been focused on. She was stood 6 feet away from me. When I check the back of the flash there is a little black line under the distance of 60ft!
Is it something I am doing wrong? Is the flash faulty? or is it just a poor quality flash?
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Melanie

Hi Melanie, if you had both on auto, then the standard setting in the camera is auto iso, this will be iso800 and on mine it's the same - 60ft. It's a reasonable flash, and can sometimes be tempremental. Have a play with the settings, first off try pulling the diffuser out at the top of the flash, and bouncing off the celing.

I found the better settings to be either Aperture mode or party indoor on the scene setting.

HTH,

Phil.

I bought a jessops flash the same, but used it on a canon 400D. I had a great amount of problems with it, including over and under exposing shots. I found that the hot shoe (the bit where it connects to the camera - not sure if this is the right name for it) didn't actually connect properly, if i pushed it tighter the the camera, even though i had done it up fully, it worked fine. I looked around on the net a bit, and found that this seemed to be a problem. I took it back got another one, and the same happened. So i bought a canon one.

If you don't have any luck definitely take it back. Or go into jessops and see what they say.

I use one if these on my d90 I always use the diffuser on it and have it bouncing off somewhere. I think for the money they are ok. I even left my camera on burst mode when I was putting stuff on eBay and the flash fired every time for 5 shots and gave great results each time I was impressed with it.
