Apologies if this question has already been answered before...

I have recently acquired a Canon 7d having previously ben with a Sony system.

I am a bit confused, due to the large and varied types/numbers, as to what/which flash units I can use with the 7D.

Any suggestions would be greatly received.

Regards, Paul

Any that are currently available new and are marketed as "for Canon" or are made by Canon themselves will work. There are older ones that do too but if you're looking at buying new you don't need to get into that.

They won't all have the same features though so you'll have to check they do what you want them to do.

Really only looking to enhance the 'on board' flash (for now), do not want to spend a fortune !! For example, a well known auction site (!!) has a speedlite 380ex for sale. Seems a good price but, only if it works and improves the built in flash ??

380EX is quite old now, but should be okay if the price is right. Also look at used 430EX/EX2, 550EX, 580EX/EX2. You can use the pop-up on your 7D as a remote master controller.

If you want to improve on the pop-up though, you've got to bounce it, or use a diffuser accessory of some sort, and learn a little about how light works.

Also look at third party options from Nissin and Metz.

I have seen a 430 EZ What is the difference between the EX/EZ please ?? (I'm guessing the EZ is an older film flash ??)

Won't be fully compatible, and old now.

That would explain the price then !! Time to keep well away, many thanks.
