Hi Guys,

I was just looking at Nissin flashes there so i hit the search facility to see what people were saying about them and they have some pretty good reviews. I also noticed that a few folk were stating that it might be a better idea to purchase flashes from Flash in the Pan and i was wondering if someone could tell me what flashes Graham has and if you have used them what is your verdict. I have asked Graham for costs for a couple of these and a soft box, umbrella and stands.

Ask Graham!

Honestly, he's a lovely gentleman! He's the kinda guy that you can ask about flash or lighting or whatever and he's upfront and explains it all in a way that you understand.

HoppyUK is the same. They're both lovely gentlemen who know their stuff (and have probably wondered what they let themselves in for, when they answered some of my daft questions! )

the reviews speak for themselves, both of the flashes and FITP, but it is important to remember that these flashes are manual only - they won't work automatically with your camera like a 430ex or similar will - as such, they are great for off camera work where you would normally set the power manually anyway....but not so good for using on camera. They will work on camera...just not automatically getting the right power level.

Hi Magicmynx,

I have asked him. Thanks for the responses guys.

Itsdavedotnet,

Not knowing too much about lighting, do you think i would be able to use these then if they can only be set manually. Is it difficult to get the hang of using these or are the fairly easy to get used to? The only experience i have had was my 430 ex mk2 and to be honest i did nothing with it apart from plunk it on top of my camera.

if you have a 430 I would buy some radio slaves and learn with one first adding additional lights later as you understand more

Graham is a good guy.....

His sense of humour took some getting used to,when he had one, before he started being an advertiser on here.....:D

Hi David,

I don't have it any more. I sold it a while to purchase a 85mm f1.8.

Right guys more daft questions coming up.

If i have one flash mounted on a stand with the umbrella and another mounted with the soft box are these tethered together to my camera or do they fire remotely?

Do i need a mounted flash on my camera to fire these or does the camera itself set the flashes off?

You would either need to set the flashes to slave and use on board flash to set them off or purchase a radio trigger and 2 receivers..(available from for sale section FITP).

Mark

So i can fire them from my camera. Would you recommend the trigger and receivers Mark? What would be the point of these if the flashes can be fired from the camera?

If you use the on board flash this will be seen in the photographs and it is not good outdoors on a sunny day...

With radio triggers some have a range over 50m and also allows you to fire your flash inside, behind or through items.

I personally use radio triggers that i bought from FITP...

:)

i bought a flash from him and i was very happy with it and the service, hes a lovely guy and i highly recommend him

I think there's a problem using the on-board flash to trigger slave units. It won't work.

The problem is that with many cameras you cannot switch the flash to fully manual flash firing (the manual override is limited to +/- compensation). In other words you cannot disable the pre-flash that they use to measure the exposure before the main flash fires, so the slaves react to, and go off with, the pre-flash and miss the main exposure completely. Apart from the fact that the on-baord flash will contribute to the main exposure, at least to some small extent, which may not be desirable.

So, if you cannot disable the pre-flash on your camera, the only way is to use a radio trigger. Using Yongnuo guns, you should only need one transmitter and one receiver, and then the gun which is attached to the receiver will in turn trigger the optical slaves built in to the other Yongnuo guns.

I had the nissin DI622 and its a lovely flash, almost as good as the canon. Only problem is that you cannot remotely trigger it, unless you use another flash to trigger it optically. So i switched over to the YongNuo's and they are very very good and excellent value for more. The only downside is that they do not have ettl, which is when the lens is mounted on the camera and it automatically adjusts the power for you to get a nice exposure. since you already have a canon, you got a flash with ettl, so id say go for the YN's and have fun playing around with them.

I believe there is a problem with 'ebay triggers' (whatever they are) but will the Yongnuo RF-602 radio trigger not fire the Nissin successfully?

There is an issue with the Di622 compatibility with wireless trigger systems, however I believe Kenro, the Nissin distributors will update the firmware for you foc. I have the address/contact details for them if anyone has one of these flashguns and wants to get the upgrade done, just drop me a pm

i tried the nissin i had with the rf-602 and it didnt work, so i opted to replace it with the YN 460 flashes as I didnt want the hassle of having to different sets of triggers.
