Hi all.m

Just bought my first darling, a canon 700d and picked up a yongnuo yn560-iii flash. Attached the flash to the hot shoe and nothing. Flash doesn't fire and can't get into the external flash settings in the menu as the camera isn't recognising the flash. Is there something I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance. John.

Are the camera and flash new?

Because the 560 is a manual only flash the menu options won't be accessible (they are just for fully compatible ETTL flashes)
Check that the flash is not set for optical slave (where it would wait to see anotherflash firing)

There is an M option, S1, S2 and RX options. I assume the S1 and S2 options are the slaves?

Yes it should be set to M, and providing it's seated correctly as above it should fire. Does it fire using the test button?

It now works. From pressing the shutter an orange light flashes on the front of the camera for approx 10 seconds before the flash fires twice. Is this right or is there a setting I need to change?

Thanks for the help so far

That sounds like the camera is set on delay timer, but I'm not familiar with the 700D so could be wrong.
