Hi all,

Got great advice about lenses here before. Now the weather is changing where I live and there are less good days for outdoor shoots. I have started to take profile pictures at windows and have a reflector, a DIY reflector, which helps me but I want to do more interior shots and I'd like a flash. The big issue is I don't know a lot about it and have avoided it up til now.

So, I don't have a lot of money, around 200 pounds maximum, I would like a decent flash for my D7000. I am not even going to try to use the inbuilt one, although I suppose I could make a DIY diffuser for it but since I am in the mood to spend money why not get a separate one. They must be superior. Maybe you would suggest I get something extra too, like a softbox (?)
What I want is to take portrait photos in regular sized rooms that already have some but not much ambient light from a window. Can you help? :) Thanks a lot!

Hi

Are you looking for a new flash or would a used one be okay? Do you want the flash to ttl or not? Are you going to be using it on or off camera?

Also if you get a soft box or umbrella do not forget to factor in the cost of light stands.

Hi,

Well, I don't know the advantages of off or on camera. I was only thinking 'on camera'. ttl would be great but no doubt more expensive.

If you're looking for "something superior" and with TTL capabilities you won't go too far wrong with a Nikon SB700. Your budget of £200 wont get you a new one but if you hunt around some of the auction sites you'll find something used that will fall within your budget.
If you also get yourself a set of Yongnuo wireless triggers (around £30) it'll take you into a new world of off camera flash and you'll wonder why you haven't done it earlier.
Only my two penneth for what it's worth
Regards
NN.

Yes as above. Have a look for the sb800 or sb700 used. You could also have a look at the Nissin or yongnuo range of flashes.

A Yongnuo YN568 and a pair of YN622N triggers, On camera TTL including high speed sync, off camera TTL so you can dip your toes with confidence, then start with off camera manual.

Absolute bargain and flexibility.

For the last few months I've been experimenting with a Yongnou speed light and a couple of YN622C triggers. I've been using the stuff off camera and in manual mode.

As Phil says, they're an absolute bargain. The results are really good as well.

Thanks so much. Will investigate and likely buy the Yongnuo YN568 :)
