Right, I am thinking of trying out some nightclub photography and was wondering if someone could give me some advice on flash. Up until now I have very rarely used flash but have started experimenting with the on camera flash and low shutter speeds (1/5 onwards). I have a 450D and I have just ordered a 430exII but I find the whole thing kind of intimidating :p. Do I need anything else like a diffuser?

Can someone give me some advice or some reading material about how the flash actually works? Mainly I am confused about how, when using a flash (inbuilt or not), you can use low shutter speeds and move the camera and the subject will stay in focus, but when you don't the subject blurs :(. Can someone explain the technicalities of how this actually works?

If I'm shooting in manual with my new flash how much fiddling about the menus will I need to do? Will it work/adjust fine off the bat?

Have a look at http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/index.html

It will blow your mind at first but stick with it.

Thanks :), just having a read through now!

Cock a snook at this; clicky

Thanks :), I've already had a quick look through that thread. The OP has a good summary but most of the stuff mentioned are things I'm already aware of (I'm good friends with a current nightclub photographer and I pick up tips and things from him :)). I'm more curious/keen to actually learn about the technical side of flash...not just how to use it but more how does it work?

I'd consider either buying an orbis ring flash or making your own. That's what I'd do.
