Flash help

I have a Canon 400D and a zillion film cameras. Would a Vivitar Auto Thyristor 283 Flash Gun attached to a hot shoe slave
work on my Canon or would it fry?

I haven't a clue when it comes to flashes and would like a cheap one to play with.

Be very careful. Old 283 were a camera zapper. The new model is OK ***.You can tell by the old model had a socket for transformer input. Strange thing is the Vivitar 285, olmost identical had a very low trigger,mine is 8 volts.

I've got one and wouldn't use it directly on my digital kit (ok for secondary flash though)
