I’m looking to get a bit more from my 430EX flash unit and am looking for pointers I can read about from the simplest to the not so simple. Could anyone recommend a web site, book etc?

I have come accross this
http://photonotes.org/articles/eos-flash/

but not read it yet. Just wondering what else might help.

Thanks
Steven

Google "canon 430ex ii tutorial" which throws up plenty, including a .pdf from Canon Digital learning. My own experience has been 'try it and see'. There are all sorts of ways you can 'get a bit more' from your flash, including TTL, Manual, Off Camera, Light Modifiers, multiple flashes etc. Once you start to experiment its quite addictive. I just don't seem to have enough to time to devote to it as I would like, but I've had fun with my combination of 430EX and 580EX.

Thanks a lot for that.

Time.......... I hope to have some when I'm 65, just hope it's not in a box!!!

What camera do you have? What are you trying to achieve?

I've a 550d.
To get into it a bit. In the house I always have to use the 430 flash (being this time of year). I've been using a 17-55 f2.8 canon lens.
When taking pictures in the house of my son playing I often get a harsh white in the face and/or shadow on the wall. I have used the flash to bounce the light off of the roof etc and used a stofen (sp?) to soften the light but I still sometime get the same results.
I need to spend time with the camera and flash to ensure I'm using correct setting but this isn't really possible when playing with my son as I'm then ignoring him.
I really need to do some night time reading etc to improve, and that was the point of my post (but without going into it in the OP).

Photonotes author NK Guy's book is rather better (see website) but better still is Syl Arena's Speedliter's Handbook. Comprehensive, easy to read
