Flash Gun Problem

Hello,
I have a Metz 36 AF-40 Flash Gun which worked perfectly on my Panasonic Lumix FZ50, but I now have a Nikon D300 and for some reason when I put the flash on, and take a photo, the flash will only fire once - when I go to take a second photo it doesnt fire. Do you think its a problem with the flash gun or am I not setting it up right with the nikon? The green light is on okay on the flash, when I take the first pic it will then go out for a few seconds then come on again as if its ready but nothing fires when I take the photo. But the flash does fire when I push the 'test' button. There is another light on the flash which says 'OK' above it - but it never lights up.

Can anyone help?!

I think you will need to get a flashgun that is dedicated to Nikon for it to work correctly on your D300. Your present gun is possibly dedicated to your previous Lumix system.

I would be careful, though, because the layout/function of the pins might be different with a possibility of damage to either camera or gun.

I suggest you call the importers and service agents for your Metz flash, Intro 2020, and they will give you the correct advice.

Thanks Ernie!

Really hope I have not caused any damage to my camera!! The lay-out of the pins is different to the camera - just had a look, but they match the panasonic. Fingers crossed I have not done something stupid with putting it onto the Nikon.

I think you will probably be OK Jenni, because its normally the trigger voltage that causes problems, and for any of the current or recent Metz guns, it is low. If your Nikon is working OK at the moment, it should be OK; I just wouldn't pursue trying to mix your Pano gun with Nikon!

One cheaper solution would be if there is an adapter or adapter cable available - I'm sure I've seen somebody advertise them - that would allow a Pano gun to interface with a Nikon camera. The other way might be to use your gun off camera with the camera flash as trigger. Whether you would get TTL might be a question, though.

Somebody who is familiar with your camera might have a better suggestion!

AFAIK no-one makes adapters to allow the use of dedicated ttl flashes on other cameras and even if they did I doubt the market for Panasonic/Olympus-Nikon fit would warrant their production anyway.

One cheap way around it would be to buy a regular hotshoe adapter, the kind for adding a pc port to a flashgun, open it up and snip the ttl wires so that the only one in use was the main power one.

That should allow the Panasonic-fit flash to work on the op's Nkon, however only in manual mode and as (as far as I can see) it doesn't offer manual power output adjustment that would mean full power all the time.

The best option would be to sell it and buy one suitable for the D300......

Buy a Mets with SCA system, then you have flash for all cameras
