I recently started a thread about getting a new canon body and after several responses have decided to get a 5dmk3.

Moving from a 40d, I have never owned a flash gun. As the 5d3 has no built in flash I now need to decide if I should get a flash gun rather than the 70-200mm F4 L lens I was considering. Most of my photography takes place outside but I do some pet portraits (mostly outside aswell to be honest). Just wondered what your thoughts on this would be?

Decent glass every time.

Halfords will sell you a torch for £9.99.;)

I've never owned a flash, but I love my 5Diii and it's glass collection.:D

What lenses have you got? Might be worth thinking about getting a Youngnuo rather than a Canon flash...you might be able to have both the flash and the lens ;-)

I have just started to use flash for fill light when taking outside pics....it makes a big difference when you get it right. I'm using the Youngnuo triggers to get the flash off the camera, and it's good fun.

If you're using a 70-200 then chances are that a flash is lower down on the list. I bought the 70-200 F4 when using my 60D and it's only recently when I've been taking photos at gigs & events after I bought the 5dmkIII that I've needed a flash whilst using my 35L. I'm actually getting the new Canon flash as soon as funds permit. I've been working overtime for a month to pay for it then an unexpected bill popped up :(

Currently have 24-105 L, 100 L macro and 17-40 L.

It's a tough choice, I think I would prefer a lens but don't want to get the 5d3 and new lens then be annoyed that I need a flash!

Well, depending on what you want to shoot I suppose, I'd say that purely based on your lenses that you'd use a flash more, especially with the dark nights upon us now.
