Yes
Birthday coming up soon and I thought I could get a flash unit. I'm not sure though whether I can even get what I'm looking for! So, here's what I want.

A ring flash for macro work and a flash unit insted of my pop up flash. Can I get an all in one? One where I can detach the macro ring when not using it and just use the rest?

I was looking at a speedlite and then a seperate macro outfit, but I don't want to be having 2.

Does that make sense? And more to the point - Does anyone make it?!

Thanks for that - Looks as though I may have to go down the DIY route
Was looking at the 430EXII so will have to hunt out some moe info

Looking at the "hooked gadgets" seems interesting enough. But one part I am a bit doubtful about is using the on board flash to transmit light down. The onboard flash is weak power to start with and the light loss must be an issue. I have used two small strobe tubes for front flash, now I will try 4 tubes, 2 lateral and 2 vertical and see how it turns out.

An ex flash and off shoe cord would be my choice in your situation, you will get far more control of your light for flash work on your macro work.

Canon actually make an adapter which sits over a 580EXII, pipes the light from the flash down fibre optic tubes to a ring assembly arranged around the lens, but they're pricey.

Whilst looking for that I came across this!

The Ray flash ring is NOT a Canon product, it by an independent company that make versions to fit most flash guns from Nikon and Canon, they may also fit other make such as
Sony HVL – F58AM
Metz 54 Series
Nissin 866 & 622

Canon do two macro ring flash units the Canon MR-14EX Macro Lite at £395 and the Canon MT-24EX Macro Twin Lite at £659

Really? Because it appeared it the EOS magazine (including the paper version) I assumed it must have been one of their own products.

It has to be said, the styling didn't look right to be Canon manufactured.

Can you get third party off shoe cords? I understand that the Canon ones cost the price of an elderly relative!
