Hi
Can anyone recommend a cheap flashgun for light painting. Just going to use it handheld so doesn't need to be camera specific but would prefer it to have variable power output and the ability to use coloured gels on the front.
thanks

I was going to get a cheapo flash for light painting, but, after reading on power output and distance covered I decided to bite the billet and get a canon 580exII. I didn't want to be in a situation further down the line where is kick myself because the cheapo flash wasn't cutting the mustard, so to speak.

Not answered your question, I know but... It may be worth considering yourself in that situation - you'd not have the flash power and end up selling and buyin a more powerful one.

Also ask yourself what you light painting, large or small objects, also do some homework on flashes an understand the reach of each flash unit and decide if it works with what you require from it. Then decide.

Johny, you might want to look into Yongnuo flashes, I'm thinking of the YN-460 II model in particular, but someone please correct me if there's a more appropriate model for the OPs needs.

Thanks for the comments..has given me something to think about.
@Braindg....Do you mean you got that particular flash because you have a Canon camera or because it's a good unit?
@Echo....Yep the Yongnuo look good value for money.

I just got the YN-465 as my first flash to use for a bit of everything, it has ETTL and manual mode so you can change the strength of the flash that is put out also has a full tilt and swivel head. Check out some YouTube vids on it. Build quality is good as far as I'm concerned and its a great price! :) hope this helps...

Carl.

I gut it because its capable of eliminating very large areas and has far reach, perfect for my needs.
