Hi
Can anyone advise me of a good flash for a canon 40D. I was aiming to spend around £100.
Thanks for you advice in advance.

If you can up your money to £150 you should get a decent second hand Canon 430ex11 on this forum, they come up regularly..great flash for the money and will work well with your 40d.

if you want to buy new you are basically looking at the chinese one - yuonogou and nissin (and jessops - but that is a rebadged nissin)

second hand 60 odd quid will get you a second hand 420ex and upwards from there you can get newer second hand models including the 430ex mk1 , the 550ex , and various from sunpak, sigma and metz

Don't be tempted by any very cheap canon EZ models are these arent digital compatible (although they do make nice slave units used off camera)

this might do the trick http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/us...-dg-st-ettl-ii-flashgun,-canon-eos-dedicated/

For your reference (if you haven't already got it), the 40D manual says:

External Speedlites

EOS-dedicated, EX-series Speedlites
Basically operates like a built-in flash for easy operation.
When an EX-series Speedlite is attached to the camera, almost all the autoflash control is done by the camera. In other words, it is like a high- output flash attached externally in place of the built-in flash. For detailed instructions, see the EX-series Speedlite’s instruction manual. This camera is a Type-A camera that can use all the features of EX-series Speedlites.

Canon Speedlites other than the EX-series

  • With an EZ/E/EG/ML/TL-series Speedlite set in the TTL or A-TTL autoflash mode, the flash can be fired at full output only. Set the camera’s shooting mode to manual or aperture-priority AE and shoot.
  • When using a Speedlite which has manual flash mode, shoot with the manual flash mode.
  • With an EX-series Speedlite set to TTL autoflash with the flash’s Custom Function, the flash will fire at full output only.

Pretty much any flash. I used yongnuo 460mk2 with the RF602 triggers with great results with my 40D. Don't see the need to pay through the nose for E-TTL when manual flash works great... You could probably pick up 2 flashes and the trigger/receiver set for £100.

which is great until the cheap flash goes pop and fries the circuitry of the camera its attached to (which has happened to me - insurance refused to pay on the grounds that i hadn't taken due care by using a cheap flash in the first place)

The basic problem with the chinese kit is that the quality control sucks so you get good ones and bad ones and you can't tell which you've got until something happens.

Personally I'll only use the credible brands , and i'd rather have a secondhand EX speedlite, than a new piece of chinese crap - but its a matter of personal choice

I was lucky and managed to pick up a second-hand 550EX for £75 (no case or manual) from my local camera shop last year. It's a bit scuffed but works fine.

Nice find! I have two of these, bought both on here for just over £100 each. Great flash for the money!

Personally the best thing would be a 480EXII, right balance of size, performance, quality etc

i think you've just invented a new flash sam - you can have a 580EXII - although you wont get one anywhere near the OPs budget , or a 430EXII

Have to say I never use mine on camera, always off, so there's no chance of damaging electrics. Agreed there are sometimes QC issues but both my Yongnuo have been fab.

I'd recommend as others have a Canon flash

I would have thoiught you'd have been able to pick up a 430EX for around your budget...

Yeah sorry, meant 430exII. I'v not tried 3rd party but theres mixed reports, some people swear by them and others at them. Very rarely heard of problems with the EX's, i guess the extra is for peace of mind.

I picked up a Jessops 360 AFD here for less than £40. I have since added a Stofen type diffuser for it. Great flash for the money, although it does feel a lot less sturdy than the Canon offerings.
