i currently have a 7d and am now thinking about a 6d. However the 6d does not have any on board flash so looking at compact flash like to 90EX

Before you say get bigger I already have the 580ex. I just want somit compact that's as good as the canon on board flash.

Will to 90EX do?

Thought the 90 was primarily designed to suit the EOS M range, probably best with the 270 flash as a compact one...

I moved from a 20d win a 480exii to a 6D and had the same dilemma. I thought I'd put off buying a smaller flash and just use the 480 for a while to see how it went. I carry the flash and camera together in a small rucksack most of the time and it's not been a problem. I never did get round to the smaller flash.

I can't understand the desire for one (apologies if that's not helpful)

Since having a camera with a built in flash (about 15 years and about 20 cameras) I've probably taken about 20 images using it (generally for fill flash).

Why? because it's a horrible nasty point light source, which is no use to someone wanting to 'draw with light' to create an interesting image (photography - as it's better known)

Phil do you mean that onboard flash is a nasty light source or any flash,I'm assuming you mean inbuilt camera flash?

the only reason i would use the 90ex personally is because it can be used a master flash (odd feature that not advertised much) but if you planning to get a smaller flash unit the 270ex ii is a better flash unit IMO but all things considered the 430ex ii isn't a huge flash, i seem to have a acquired a vast array of canon flashes and they all have their own purposes. HTH

Hi,

I have a 430 EX II and a 580 EX but, when I want to travel light, I use a small Metz 24.
It's very good for a small flash and has auto focus assist light (the 270 EX doesn't). It works great on my 40D, but it sometimes fires at full power on my 5Dc, though.

My 2 cents. ;)

An inbuilt flash misses the single most important thing I need to do with on camera flash, which is to make it look like it's coming from somewhere else.

Straight on flash as a key light is rubbish. It looks as bad shot on a 70d as it does on an iPhone.

If I'm stuck using on camera flash, my first thought is 'what am I bouncing this off?'. And a built in flash or the smallest on camera flashes don't do bouncing.

ok got you,so no objection to hot shoe flash bounced and or a flash sat somewhere else set off by the camera right?

say your doing a wedding shoot outside, what do you bounce off for stuff like that?
