I would set the exposure for the scene (sky) and, if you don't have TTL, meter
the flash to the same or a tad less to open the shadows.

There's no single right way, but the shot you have with a touch of fill flash would work.
Probably TTL with a little -FEC (as there is a tendency to over flash with auto)

But a reflector might have worked too, and there's lots of other options depending on how far from that 'reality' you're happy to go.

I'd also add, you should've spotted the contrasty light on his face as it's also making him squint, turn him 90 anti clockwise to make that a backlight.

What exactly are you referring to when you say "..... I made a really bad job of this"

Accidentally posted the same message twice.

I wanted the SMFC in the background, that is who the lad plays for.It was a quick shoot so did not have any reflectors, next time i will try TTL with a little -FEC

Fill flash usually works for me, expose for the background, then TTL -0.7 of a stop.

Yes but if you had turned him like Phil suggested you could still have retained that in the background and got much better lighting

Full flash from the right hand side or load into Lightroom and fill the shadows on rhs of face

I think Allan's approach to SOOC is better practice!
